Abstract

An interconnect element incorporates a plurality of smaller, substantially identical, interconnect modules. Multiple identical elements can in turn be combined to form larger interconnect networks. Signal paths in the elements can be implemented with optical fibers or electrical conductors.

Claims (24)

1. A method of implementing an interconnect fabric for a communications switch that has inputs and outputs, the method comprising;

selecting N a number of switch inputs;

selecting K a second number, less than the number N of switch inputs;

providing a plurality of K×K substantially identical interconnect modules, each module includes K 2 separate bidirectional, optical communications paths, each path has one signal input and one signal output; and

coupling the switch inputs to the plurality of modules with only one switch input per path

2. A method as in claim 1 which includes selecting a number of switch outputs and coupling the switch outputs to the plurality of modules.

3. A method as in claim 2 where the plurality of modules is sufficient to couple each of the switch inputs to each of the switch outputs.

4. A method as in claim 2 where providing includes:

associating some of the modules with a selected group of switch inputs and modules with other groups of switch inputs thereby coupling each switch input to a selected number of sets of communications paths.

5. A method as in claim 4 which includes establishing groups of switch outputs responsive to the number of modules.

6. A method as in claim 5 which includes associating various ones of the modules with switch outputs of a selected group of outputs thereby coupling each switch output to a second selected set of communications paths.

7. A method as in claim 6 which includes selectively coupling each switch input to each switch output.

8. A method as in claim 7 which includes assigning an equal number of switch inputs as switch outputs.

9. A method as in claim 8 which includes assigning a number of modules in accordance, at least in part, with the square of the number of switch inputs.

10. A method as in claim 7 which includes dividing each switch input into a group of input transmission paths.

11. A method as in claim 10 which includes coupling the transmission paths for each switch input to a subgroup of the plurality of modules.

12. A method as in claim 10 which includes dividing each switch output into a group of output transmission paths.

13. A method as in claim 12 which includes coupling the transmission paths for each switch output to a second set of the pluralities of communications paths.

14. A method as in claim 10 which includes providing bidirectional passive paths for each switch input to each switch output.

15. A method as in claim 1 which includes separating the modules into groups, each group having as many switch inputs as the second number.

16. A method as in claim 15 which includes assigning a number of input switches, equal to the second number, to each group.

17. A method as in claim 1 including selecting a third number that is less than the second number, and implementing each module of communications paths with a second plurality of sub-sets of paths, each sub-set includes a number of paths corresponding to the third number multiplied by itself.

18. A method as in claim 1 which includes coupling input switches between the switch inputs and signal inputs of the plurality of modules.

19. A method as in claim 18 which includes coupling output switches to the signal outputs of the plurality of modules.
