Abstract

A system for pumping or mixing a fluid using a rotating pumping or mixing element and various other components for use in a pumping or mixing system are disclosed.

Claims (33)

1. An apparatus for mixing a fluid, comprising:

a vessel comprising a bag including a flexible wall at least partially defining an interior compartment capable of receiving and holding the fluid;

a fluid-agitating element in the interior compartment of the vessel; and

a receiver secured to the flexible wall for receiving the fluid-agitating element.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the fluid-agitating element is disengaged from the receiver and capable of rotating relative to the receiver and moving toward or away from the wall of the vessel.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the receiver includes a retainer for retaining the fluid-agitating element.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the fluid-agitating element includes a passage for receiving the receiver, said passage including an opening at one end having a transverse dimension larger than a corresponding dimension of the receiver.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the receiver comprises an imperforate sidewall forming a cavity.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the receiver includes an inner surface for contacting the fluid when present in the vessel and an outer surface external to the interior compartment for positioning adjacent a motive device for rotating the fluid-agitating element.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the fluid-agitating element includes a home or resting position and is capable of levitating relative to the receiver to an active position.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , further including a motive device for rotating the fluid-agitating element, the motive device including an upper portion matching a corresponding outer surface of the receiver.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the fluid-agitating element comprises a substantially cylindrical body having an outer wall spaced from a sidewall of the receiver.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the flexible wall of the vessel includes an opening said receiver being at least partially within the opening of the vessel.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the fluid-agitating element is substantially cylindrical and carries at least one blade.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the fluid-agitating element includes a plurality of magnets.

13. An apparatus for mixing a fluid, comprising:

a vessel comprising a bag including a flexible wall at least partially defining an interior compartment capable of receiving and holding the fluid; and

a rotatable fluid-agitating element for agitating the fluid in the interior compartment of the vessel;

the vessel further including a receiver having a projecting portion with a sidewall and an endwall defining a cavity, said projecting portion including an outer surface in communication with the environment exterior to the interior compartment of the vessel and an inner surface within the interior compartment of the vessel and adjacent the fluid-agitating element.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the fluid-agitating element is positioned adjacent the inner surface of the cavity within the vessel and retained adjacent the receiver by a coupling.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 , further including a retainer for providing a retention function to maintain the fluid-agitating element adjacent the inner surface of the cavity.

16. The apparatus of claim 13 , further including a rotatable rod positioned in the cavity adjacent the outer surface, said rod adapted for being rotated by a motor for inducing rotation in the fluid-agitating element.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , further including a bearing for facilitating rotation of the rod relative to the vessel.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the bearing is positioned between the motor for rotating the rod and the vessel.

19. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the fluid-agitating element is substantially cylindrical and carries at least one blade.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the fluid-agitating element includes a plurality of magnets.

21. An apparatus for mixing a fluid, comprising:

an at least partially flexible vessel comprising a bag including an interior compartment;

means for agitating the fluid when present in the interior compartment; and

means for receiving the fluid-agitating element.

22. The apparatus of claim 21 , wherein the means for agitating comprises a rotatable, generally cylindrical fluid-agitating element for positioning in the interior compartment of the vessel in contact with the fluid when present.

23. The apparatus of claim 21 , wherein the means for receiving the fluid-agitating element comprises a post protecting within the interior compartment.

24. The apparatus of claim 21 , wherein the means for receiving comprises a projecting portion of the vessel, said projecting portion having a sidewall and an end wall defining a cavity, said projecting portion further including an outer surface in communication with the environment exterior to the interior compartment of the vessel and an inner surface within the vessel for contacting the fluid when present and adjacent the fluid-agitating element.
