Abstract

In a cavity-dumped, repetitively-pulsed, solid-state laser cavity dumping is protracted over a predetermined time longer than a round-trip time of the resonator of the laser. The cavity dumping is effected by a Pockels cell optical switch. During a dumping period a voltage applied to the Pockels cell falls in a predetermined time. Varying the voltage fall-time varies the duration of pulses provided by the laser, independent of the pulse-repetition frequency.

Claims (27)

1. A laser, comprising:

a laser-resonator terminated by first and second mirrors, the laser-resonator having a longitudinal axis, an optical length, and a round trip-time dependent on the optical length;

a gain-element located in the resonator;

an arrangement for energizing the gain-element;

an optical switch located in the resonator and arranged to permit circulation of radiation along the longitudinal axis of the resonator in a first state of the switch when the gain-element is energized, the optical switch being arranged to direct radiation out of the resonator at an angle to the longitudinal axis when not in the first state; and

wherein, the optical switch is further arranged to switch progressively from the first state to a second state in a predetermined time longer than the round-trip time of the resonator, such that circulating laser-radiation is directed out of the resonator by the switch as a laser-radiation output pulse having a duration longer than the round-trip time of the resonator.

2. The laser of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined switching time is selectively variable, such that the duration of the output pulses is selectively variable.

3. The laser of claim 1 , wherein the optical switch is also arranged to switch from the second-state thereof to the first state thereof in a time less than the round-trip time of the resonator.

4. The laser of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined time is greater than about twice the round-trip time of the resonator.

5. The laser of claim 1 , wherein the optical switch includes a Pockels cell and a quarter-wave plate located in the resonator in combination with the polarization selective reflector, the Pockels cell having a selectively variable birefringence and the polarization-selective reflector having a selectively variable effective reflectivity dependent on the birefringence of the Pockels cell.

6. The laser of claim 4 , wherein the resonator is folded by the polarization-selective reflector, the laser radiation circulates in the laser-resonator when the effective reflectivity of the polarization selective reflector is about 100% and the laser radiation is directed out of the laser-resonator via transmission through the polarization-selective reflector when the effective reflectivity thereof is less than 100%.

7. The laser of claim 6 , wherein the reflectivity of each of the first and second mirrors is about 100%.

8. The laser of claim 6 , wherein longitudinal axis of the laser-resonator extends through the polarization selective reflector, the laser radiation circulates in the laser-resonator when the effective reflectivity of the polarization selective reflector is about zero and the laser radiation is directed out of the laser-resonator via reflection from the polarization-selective reflector when the effective reflectivity thereof is greater than zero.

9. The laser of claim 6 , wherein the birefringence of the Pockels cell is varied by varying a voltage applied to the Pockels cell.

10. A laser, comprising:

a laser-resonator terminated by first and second mirrors and folded by a polarization-selective reflector, the laser-resonator having an optical length and having a round trip-time dependent on the optical length of the laser-resonator;

a gain-element located in the resonator;

an arrangement for energizing the gain-medium;

a Pockels cell and a quarter-wave plate located in the resonator and arranged to form an optical switch in combination with the polarization selective reflector, the Pockels cell having a selectively variable birefringence and the polarization-selective reflector having a selectively variable effective reflectivity dependent on the birefringence of the Pockels cell;

the optical switch being arranged to permit circulation of radiation in the resonator in a state of the optical switch wherein the effective reflectivity of the polarization-selective reflector is about 100%, in which state laser-radiation circulates in the resonator when the gain-element is energized, the optical switch being arranged to direct radiation out of the resonator when the effective reflectivity of the polarization-selective reflector is less than 100%; and

wherein, the effective reflectivity of the polarization-selective reflector is reduced progressively from about 100% to a lower value in a predetermined time longer than the round-trip time of the resonator, such that circulating laser-radiation is directed out of the resonator by the switch by transmission through the polarization-selective reflector as a laser-radiation pulse having a duration longer than the round-trip time of the resonator.

11. The laser of claim 10 , wherein the predetermined time is greater than about twice the round-trip time of the resonator.

12. The laser of claim 10 , wherein the effective reflectivity of the polarization selective reflector is progressively reduced according to a predetermined function of time.

13. The laser of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined function is linear function.

14. The laser of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined function is an exponential function.

15. The laser of claim 10 , wherein the effective-reflectivity reduction-time is selectively variable.

16. The laser of claim 10 , wherein the lower value of the effective-reflectivity reduction-time is about zero.
