Lithium-iron disulfide cell design
View Patent ↗The invention relates to electrochemical cells having a jellyroll electrode assembly that includes a lithium-based negative electrode, a positive electrode with a coating comprising greater than about 94 wt. % of iron disulfide.
1. A battery comprising:
a. a jellyroll electrode assembly comprising an anode consisting essentially of lithium or a lithium alloy without the use of a separate current collector, a microporous separator having a thickness between 16 and 22 microns, and a cathode comprising a cathode dry mix coated onto at least one side of a current collector, said coating having a thickness, exclusive of the current collector, between 80 microns and 102 microns and a void volume, exclusive of the current collector, between 28% and 40%, said cathode dry mix comprising at least one binder, at least one conductor, at least one processing aid and between 95-98 wt. % of pyrite having at least 95 wt. % of iron disulfide, and said cathode dry mix further having a cathode dry mix density of at least 4.35 g/cc and a cathode loading, after coating and densification on the current collector, of at least 24 mg/cm 2 ;
b. an organic electrolyte comprising 1,3-dioxolane and 1,2-dimethoxyethane;
c. a cylindrical container having a yield strength, a height and a diameter, said height exceeding the diameter of the container; and
d. wherein, under any discharge condition, the jellyroll electrode assembly exerts between greater than 50% but no more than 80% of the yield strength of the container.
2. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the battery has a capacity of at least 4000 mAh at 200 mA continuous drain for a FR6 battery.
3. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the coating comprises less than 2 wt. % conductor.
4. The battery of claim 3 , wherein the coating comprises 2 wt. % or less of binder, processing aid, or combination thereof.
5. The battery of claim 1 , wherein the cylindrical container is formed from cold rolled steel.
6. The battery of claim 5 , wherein the cylindrical container has a wall with a thickness between 7-10 mils when the cell is an FR6 cell.
