Abstract

An aspect of the present invention provides a method of controlling a multi-layer transport network. In accordance with the invention a determination is made as to whether a connection supporting a performance requirement of a call can be established within a first layer of the network. If the connection cannot be established, an association is defined between the call and a second call instantiated within a respective server layer of the network. By this means a network call controller in a client layer relies on a call and connection in a server layer instead of a connection in the client layer.

Claims (19)

1. A method of controlling a multi-layer transport network, the method comprising:

determining whether a connection supporting a performance requirement of a call can be established within a first layer of the network; and

if the connection cannot be established within the first layer, defining an association between the call and a second call instantiated within a second layer of the network.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, if the connection cannot be established within the first layer, sending a request to a call controller of the second layer to trigger the instantiation of the second call within the second layer.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising determining whether a second connection supporting the performance requirement of the call can be established within the second layer of the network.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising, if the second connection cannot be established within the second layer, defining an association between the second call and a third call to be instantiated within a third layer of the network.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the second layer is enabled to provide a more stringent performance requirement than the performance requirement of the call.

6. The method of claim 3 , wherein determining whether a second connection supporting the performance requirement of the call can be established within the second layer of the network comprises determining whether characteristic information (CI) of the call can be supported at the second layer.

7. A system for establishing a call connection for a call, the system comprising:

a first call controller at a first layer, the first call controller determining whether a connection supporting a performance requirement of a call can be established within a first layer of the network, and if the connection cannot be established within the first layer, providing a call request message to a second layer:

a second call controller at the second layer, the second call controller determining if a performance requirement of the call can be met at the second layer, and if so, establishing a second call at the second layer: and

at least one of said first and second call controllers defining an association between the call and the second call.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the second call controller receives parameters from the first call controller to enable the second call controller to determine if the second call controller can meet the performance requirement of the call.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein the second call controller determines if a performance requirement of the call can be met using a Generic Framing Protocol adaptation.

10. The system of claim 7 , further comprising a third call controller at a third layer, the third call controller determining if the performance requirement of the call can be met at the third layer, in response to a call request message from the second call controller.

11. The system of claim 7 , wherein the first call controller is adapted to receive a call at a Media Access Control (MAC) layer.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the second call controller is adapted to establish a VC-3 connection for the call.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first call controller determines whether the call can be completed at the MAC layer before providing a call request to the second layer.

14. The system of claim 7 , further comprising an adaptation service between the first call controller and the second call controller to adapt data of the call from a first protocol to a second protocol.
