Abstract

An apparatus and method for harvesting bone and bone marrow are provided. The apparatus may include a driver operable to be releasably engaged with an intraosseous device. The intraosseous device may include a cannula having a first end operable to penetrate bone and bone marrow and to allow retrieval of portions of bone and/or bone marrow. The cannula may have a second end operable to be releasably engaged with bone marrow sampling equipment. The apparatus may include a removable trocar. The removable trocar may have an inner channel operable to convey portions of bone and/or bone marrow. The removable trocar may have an inner channel and a side port communicating with the inner channel. The removable trocar may have a first end operable to penetrate bone and bone marrow.

Claims (32)

1. An apparatus for harvesting portions of bone and associated bone marrow from a target area comprising:

bone marrow aspiration equipment attached to a source of vacuum;

an intraosseous needle having a first end and a second end, the first end of the intraosseous needle operable to penetrate a bone and associated bone marrow;

the intraosseous needle having a longitudinal bore extending from the first end to the second end;

a hub attached to the second end of the intraosseous needle;

an intraosseous connector assembly defined in part by a right angle connector with a Luer fitting formed on a first end of the right angle connector;

a lock nut rotatably disposed on exterior portions of the first end of the right angle connector adjacent the Luer fitting;

the lock nut having threads compatible with releasably engaging similar threads disposed on a first end of the hub;

a flange formed on exterior portions of the right angle connector proximate the Luer fitting and the lock nut;

the lock nut and the flange cooperating with each other to releasably engage the first end of the right angle connector with the first end of the hub attached to the second end of the intraosseous needle; and

collection tubing extending between and communicating with a second end of the right angle connector and the bone marrow aspiration equipment to accommodate aspiration of bone marrow through the longitudinal bore of the intraosseous needle.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the intraosseous connector assembly further comprises:

flexible tubing extending from the second end of the right angle connector;

a tubing connector disposed on the flexible tubing opposite from the right angle connector;

the tubing connector operable to be engaged with one end of the collection tubing;

a flow control device disposed on the flexible tubing between the right angle connector and the tubing connector; and

the flow control device having a first position operable to allow fluid communication through the flexible tubing and a second position operable to block fluid communication through the flexible tubing.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the lock nut is slidably disposed on exterior portions of the first end of the right angle connector.

4. An apparatus for harvesting portions of bone and associated bone marrow from a target area comprising:

an outer penetrator having a first end and a second end with a longitudinal bore extending therebetween;

a first end of the outer penetrator operable to penetrate a bone and associated bone marrow;

the longitudinal bore of the outer penetrator forming a portion of the longitudinal bore of an associated intraosseous device;

a hub securely engaged with and fixed relative to the second end of the outer penetrator;

external threads disposed on first end of the hub;

the outer penetrator extending from a flange formed on and fixed relative to a second end of the hub;

the flange on the hub operable to allow insertion of the intraosseous device at an insertion site on a patient's iliac crest and to contact a patient's skin adjacent to the insertion site on the patient's iliac crest;

the longitudinal bore of the intraosseous device extending through the hub;

collection tubing releasably coupled to the external threads of the hub and communicating with the longitudinal bore of the outer penetrator via the hub;

the collection tubing connected to a container;

the container coupled with a source of low pressure vacuum;

a removable trocar operable to be inserted into the outer penetrator to aid in inserting the outer penetrator at the insertion site on the patient's iliac crest; and

the removable trocar having internal threads configured to releasably engage the external threads of the hub.
