Abstract

Systems, methods and devices are disclosed for directing and focusing signals to the brain for neuromodulation and for directing and focusing signals or other energy from the brain for measurement, heat transfer and imaging. An aperture in the skull and/or a channel device implantable in the skull can be used to facilitate direction and focusing. Treatment and diagnosis of multiple neurological conditions may be facilitated with the disclosed systems, methods and devices.

Claims (22)

1. A transcranial interface configured to be implanted in the skull of a patient comprising:

a channel having an outer wall and an inner wall defining a cavity;

a plurality of lumens, wherein each lumen has a lumen wall circumscribing the lumen to thereby define a closed lumen, and each lumen is disposed in the cavity, and wherein one or more of the lumens is at least partially filled with a substance that facilitates conduction of electrical current through the channel; and

at least one gap between the plurality of lumens and the inner wall.

2. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein the outer wall and the inner wall define a layer, and the layer is formed at least in part from a substance that is substantially impermeable to ions.

The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein the outer wall has an exterior surface that is designed to contact the skull when the transcranial interface is implanted, and the exterior surface is provided with a coating comprised at least in part of a material that is substantially impermeable to ions.

The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein the channel further comprises a proximal end and a distal end such that, when the transcranial interface is implanted, the proximal end is oriented towards an outer layer of the skull and the distal end is oriented towards an inner layer of the skull, and the outer wall at the proximal end is provided with a surface that extends outwardly and away from the outer wall.

5. The transcranial interface of claim 4 , wherein the outwardly extending surface comprises a rim.

6. The transcranial interface of claim 4 , wherein the outwardly extending surface is provided with at least one feature for aiding in securing the channel in the skull.

7. The transcranial interface of claim 6 , wherein the at least one feature is an opening adapted to receive a pin or a screw.

8. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein the channel has a length extending between a proximal end and a distal end, and one or more of the plurality of lumens has a length corresponding to the length of the channel.

9. The transcranial interface of claim 8 , wherein one or more of the plurality of lumens has a length less than the length of the channel.

10. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein the substance is an ion-permeable substance.

11. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein the substance comprises one or more of the following: a porous silicone, a porous polyurethane, a saline solution, and a hydrogel.

The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein the substance comprises a porous mass constructed by sintering together particles of a nonporous polymer, wherein the nonporous polymer comprises one or more of the following: a polyurethane, a polytetrafluoroethlene, a polyetheretherketone, a polyester, and a polyamide.

13. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein the substance is provided in an open-pore sponge.

14. The transcranial interface of claim 1 , wherein the channel includes a proximal end and a distal end, and the transcranial interface further comprises at least one end cap associated with one of the proximal end and the distal end, the at least one end cap configured to retain the substance in the transcranial interface.

15. The transcranial interface of claim 14 , wherein the at least one end cap is affixed to the channel.

16. The transcranial interface of claim 14 , wherein the at least one end cap is configured to be removed from the channel.

17. The transcranial interface of claim 14 , wherein the at least one end cap is formed of one or more of a porous silicone, and a porous polyurethanes.

18. The transcranial interface of claim 14 , wherein the at least one end cap comprises a mesh formed of a non-porous polymer.

19. The transcranial interface of claim 14 , wherein the at least one end cap comprises a semipermeable membrane.
