Abstract

Architectures and techniques for treating conditions of the eye, such as presbyopia, utilize sources of treatment energy, such as electromagnetic energy emitting devices, to implement non-corneal manipulations. According to these devices and methods, the sources of treatment energy are activated to direct energy onto parts of the eye, such as the conjunctiva and sclera, to treat presbyopia. The treatments can affect at least one property of the eye and enhance an accommodation of the eye.

Claims (32)

1. A method for treating a patient ocular or other or related tissue site in need of one or more of a physiological and a vision or perceptual, comprising:

(a) applying a force to a portion of a first intercepting tissue in a first direction to change the portion from a first configuration to a second configuration;

(b) projecting a pattern of electromagnetic energy onto the first intercepting tissue in the form of a spot or a line;

(c) directing electromagnetic energy toward the pattern and into an underlying second intercepting tissue;

(d) performing (a) in second and third directions to change the portion to another configuration and then a third configuration, followed by performing (b) and (c).

2. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein (c) comprises ablating the second intercepting tissue.

3. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the (d) comprises applying a force to the portion in a direction about the center of an eye.

4. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein:

the projected pattern is a spot; and

the electromagnetic energy is directed onto the second intercepting tissue in the form of a line.

5. The method as set forth in claim 4 , wherein the electromagnetic energy is directed onto the second intercepting tissue in the form of a set of lines.

6. The method as set forth in claim 4 , wherein (c) comprises directing laser energy onto the second intercepting tissue.

7. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein:

the projected pattern is a spot; and

the electromagnetic energy is directed onto the second intercepting tissue in the form of a plurality of spots or a set of lines.

8. The method as set forth in claim 7 , wherein the electromagnetic energy is directed onto the second intercepting tissue in the form of a set of lines.

9. The method as set forth in claim 7 , wherein (c) comprises directing laser energy onto the second intercepting tissue.

10. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein (d) is followed by applying another force to the portion of the first intercepting tissue in the first direction.

11. The method as set forth in claim 10 , wherein the electromagnetic energy is directed onto the second intercepting tissue in the form of a set of lines.

12. The method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the first direction is a clockwise direction about the center of an eye.

13. The method as set forth in claim 12 , wherein (c) comprises ablating the second intercepting tissue.

14. The method as set forth in claim 12 , wherein:

the projected pattern is a spot; and

the electromagnetic energy is directed onto the second intercepting tissue in the form of a radial line.

15. The method as set forth in claim 14 , wherein the electromagnetic energy is directed onto the second intercepting tissue in the form of a set of radial lines.

16. The method as set forth in claim 14 , wherein the first intercepting tissue is a conjunctiva, the second intercepting tissue is a sclera, and (c) comprises directing laser energy onto the second intercepting tissue.

17. The method as set forth in claim 12 , wherein:

the projected pattern is a spot; and

the electromagnetic energy is directed onto the second intercepting tissue in the form of a plurality of spots or a set of radial lines.

18. The method as set forth in claim 17 , wherein the electromagnetic energy is directed onto the second intercepting tissue in the form of a set of radial lines.

19. The method as set forth in claim 17 , wherein (c) comprises directing laser energy onto the second intercepting tissue.

20. The method as set forth in claim 12 , wherein the (d) is followed by applying a force to the portion of the first intercepting tissue in the second direction.
