Abstract

A plurality of candidate access terminals for participation in a multi-user packet-based (MUP-based) communication are determined. Two or more candidate access terminals are grouped into a MUP-based group, the grouping based on a hybrid automatic repeat request behavior of the plurality of candidate access terminals. Data is sent to the MUP-based group using a multi-user packet.

Claims (54)

1. Nontransitory computer-readable media having computer-executable instructions embodied thereon that, when executed, facilitate a method of selecting two or more access terminals to participate in a multi-user packet (MUP) based communication, the method comprising:

determining a plurality of candidate access terminals that might be included in said MUP-based communication, wherein the plurality of candidate access terminals are requesting the same content and are using the same data rate control;

sending a probe packet to each of the plurality of candidate access terminals;

for each of the plurality of candidate access terminals, recording a response to the probe packet; and

prior to grouping two or more access terminals from the plurality of candidate access terminals to form a MUP-based group, characterizing hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) behavior of individual candidate access terminals from the plurality of candidate access terminals based on the responses to the probe packets, thereby providing characterizations of the HARQ behavior of the individual candidate access terminals;

grouping two or more access terminals from the plurality of candidate access terminals to form a MUP-based group, wherein said grouping is based on the characterizations of the HARQ behavior of the individual candidate access terminals, wherein each of the two or more access terminals responds to the probe packet in the same way; and

sending data to the MUP-based group using a MUP.

2. The nontransitory media of claim 1 , wherein grouping two or more access terminals comprises:

sending a probe packet to each of the plurality of candidate access terminals;

for each of the plurality of candidate access terminals, recording a response to the probe packet; and

forming the MUP-based group with a subset of the plurality of candidate access terminals, wherein each of the subset responds to the probe packet in the same way.

3. The nontransitory media of claim 2 , wherein the subset of the plurality of candidate access terminals responds with an acknowledgement.

4. The nontransitory media of claim 2 , wherein the subset of the plurality of candidate access terminals responds with a negative acknowledgement.

5. The nontransitory media of claim 1 , wherein grouping two or more access terminals comprises:

counting a number of a type of HARQ response for each of the plurality of candidate access terminals for a configurable period of time;

calculating a measure of HARQ response types for each of the plurality of candidate access terminals;

comparing the measure for each of the candidate access terminals to a HARQ threshold; and

forming the MUP-based group with a subset of the plurality of candidate access terminals, wherein each access terminal of the subset has a measure greater than the HARQ threshold.

6. The nontransitory media of claim 5 , wherein the measure of HARQ types is a ratio of the number of a type of HARQ response to a total number of responses.

7. The nontransitory media of claim 6 , wherein the type of HARQ response is an acknowledgement.

8. Nontransitory computer-readable media having computer-executable instructions embodied thereon that, when executed, facilitate a method of selecting two or more access terminals to participate in a MUP-based communication, the method comprising:

determining a plurality of candidate access terminals that might be included in said MUP-based communication, wherein the plurality of candidate access terminals are requesting the same content and are using the same data rate control;

sending a probe packet to each of the plurality of candidate access terminals:

for each of the plurality of candidate access terminals, recording a response to the probe packet;

grouping two or more access terminals from the plurality of candidate access terminals to form a MUP-based group, wherein said grouping is based on a HARQ behavior of the plurality of candidate access terminals in response to the probe packets, wherein each of the two or more access terminals in the MUP-based group responds to the probe packet in the same way, and wherein the HARQ behavior of the plurality of candidate access terminals was determined prior to grouping the two or more access terminals;

sending a first portion of a data flow to the MUP-based group using one or more MUPs;

receiving a new HARQ response from each of the two or more access terminals in the MUP-based group;

regrouping the two or more access terminals in the MUP-based group based on the new HARQ responses, resulting in a new group; and

sending a second portion of the data flow to the new group using one or more MUPs.

9. The nontransitory media of claim 8 , wherein the new HARQ response is either an acknowledgement or a negative acknowledgement.

10. The nontransitory media of claim 8 , wherein the regrouping comprises removing any access terminals from the MUP-based group that send a negative acknowledgement as the new HARQ response.

11. The nontransitory media of claim 8 , wherein grouping two or more access terminals comprises:

counting a number of a type of HARQ response for each of the plurality of candidate access terminals for a configurable period of time;

calculating a measure of HARQ response types for each of the plurality of candidate access terminals;

comparing the measure for each of the candidate access terminals to a HARQ threshold; and

forming the MUP-based group with a subset of the plurality of candidate access terminals, wherein each access terminal of the subset has a measure greater than the HARQ threshold.

12. The nontransitory media of claim 11 , wherein the regrouping comprises:

adding the new HARQ response to the number of a type of HARQ responses for each of the two or more access terminals in the MUP-based group;

calculating a new measure of MUP response types for each of the two or more access terminals in the MUP-based group;

comparing the new measure for each of the two or more access terminals in the MUP-based group; and

removing any access terminal from the MUP-based group that has a measure less than the HARQ response threshold.

13. The nontransitory media of claim 12 , wherein the type of HARQ response is an acknowledgement.

14. Nontransitory computer-readable media having computer-executable instructions embodied thereon that, when executed, facilitate a method of selecting two or more access terminals to participate in a MUP-based communication, the method comprising:

determining a plurality of candidate access terminals that might be included in said MUP-based communication, wherein the plurality of candidate access terminals are requesting the same content and are using the same data rate control;

sending a probe packet to each of the plurality of candidate access terminals to determine the HARQ behavior of the plurality of candidate access terminals;

for each of the plurality of candidate access terminals, recording a response to the probe packet, wherein the response corresponds to an aspect of HARQ behavior;

based on the responses to the probe packets, determining a HARQ behavior of the plurality of candidate access terminals;

dividing the plurality of candidate access terminals into two or more groups, wherein each of the two or more groups is based on the HARQ behavior of the plurality of candidate access terminals, and wherein each candidate access terminal in a group responded to the probe packet in the same way;

sending data to a first of the two or more groups using a MUP; and

sending data to a second of the two or more groups.

15. The nontransitory media of claim 14 , wherein the first of the two or more groups is made up of access terminals that responded to a probe packet with an acknowledgement.

16. The nontransitory media of claim 14 , wherein the second of the two or more groups is made up of access terminals that responded to a probe packet with a negative acknowledgment.

17. The nontransitory media of claim 16 , wherein sending data to a second of the two or more groups comprises sending data to the second of the two or more groups using a MUP.

18. The nontransitory media of claim 16 , wherein sending data to a second of the two or more groups comprises sending data to the second of the two or more groups using a plurality of single-user packets (SUPS).
