Abstract

Provided is a pagewidth printhead arrangement for an inkjet printer having a print engine controller. The arrangement has a wafer substrate that defines a plurality of ink inlets. A plurality of nozzles each including side walls are located on a wafer substrate with a roof portion attached to said walls to define an ink chamber. The roof portion defines an ejection port. The arrangement also includes an inlet defined in the substrate to supply the ink chamber with ink. A heater element is suspended between the side walls in the ink chamber, so that when electrical actuation energy is applied to respective heater elements, a vapour bubble is formed in the ink leading to a pressure increase in the chamber thereby ejecting the ink via the ejection port. The controller is configured to actuate the heater element to facilitate weighted ink drop volumes to be ejected from the nozzle arrangement.

Claims (14)

1. A pagewidth printhead arrangement for an inkjet printer, the arrangement comprising

a print engine controller;

a wafer substrate defining a plurality of ink inlets; and

a plurality of nozzles arranged on the substrate, each nozzle comprising:

side walls located on the wafer substrate;

a roof portion attached to said walls such that the side walls and roof portion define an ink chamber in fluid communication with a respective ink inlet, the roof portion defining an ejection port in fluid communication with the ink chamber; and

a heater element suspended between the side walls in the ink chamber, so that when electrical actuation energy is applied to the heater element a vapour bubble is formed in the ink leading to a pressure increase in the chamber thereby ejecting the fluid via the ejection port, the print engine controller being configured to actuate the heater elements to facilitate a weighted ink drop volume to be ejected from the ejection port.

2. The pagewidth printhead arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of nozzles have an areal density exceeding 40,000 nozzles per square cm of the surface of the wafer substrate.

3. The pagewidth printhead arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the heater elements are configured so that a point of collapse of the bubble is distal therefrom.

4. The pagewidth printhead arrangement of claim 3 , wherein each heater element has an annular shape with the point of collapse of the bubble near a centre thereof.

5. The pagewidth printhead arrangement of claim 4 , wherein the heater elements are concentrically arranged on top of each other.

6. The pagewidth printhead arrangement of claim 1 , wherein the inlet extends through the wafer substrate from a surface of the substrate on which the plurality of nozzles are formed to an opposite surface.

7. The pagewidth printhead arrangement of claim 6 , wherein the nozzles and the drive circuitry form a layer on the surface of the wafer substrate that is less than 10 microns thick.

8. The pagewidth printhead arrangement of claim 1 , having drive circuitry with contacts for receiving data from the print engine controller within the inkjet printer, said circuitry linked to the respective heater elements.
