Abstract

This application discloses provides a process for the introduction of nitro-group functionality into a compound which contains also a site of unsaturation and/or oxygen functionality by direct (one step) oxidation of an oxime functional group mediated by a molybdenum VI/VII peroxo complex, the process comprising: (a) providing a substrate of Formula I containing an oxime functional group; wherein R 1 and R 2 are selected independently from linear, branched or cyclic alkyl and linear, branched or cyclic alkenyl groups, optionally substituted, with the proviso that at least one of R 1 or R 2 contains a carbon/carbon double bond; and (b) contacting said substrate of Formula I with a molybdenum oxidation complex, thereby oxidizing said oxime functional group to a nitro functional group to yield the structure of Formula III. Where R 1 and R 2 are as defined above.

Claims (9)

1. A process for preparing a compound of the formula:

R—CH2—NO 2   (V)

where R is H, linear, branched or cyclic alkyl, optionally substituted, and linear branched or cyclic alkenyl, optionally substituted, wherein the optional substituents are selected from one or more of alkenylalkyl, alkynylalkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenylalkyl, arylalkyl, alkylaryl, heteroarylalkyl, heterocyclealkyl, optionally substituted heterocycloalkenylalkyl, arylcycloalkyl, and arylheterocycloalkyl, each of which is optionally substituted wherein the optional substituents are selected from one or more of alkenylalkyl, alkynylalkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenylalkyl, arylalkyl, alkylaryl, heteroarylalkyl, heterocyclealkyl, optionally substituted heterocycloalkenylalkyl, arylcycloalkyl, and arylheterocycloalkyl, halo, phenyl, cyano, hydroxyl, alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, cyano, alkoxy, alkylthio, amino, —NH(alkyl), —NH(cycloalkyl), —N(alkyl) 2 , carboxy and —C(O)O-alkyl,

the process comprising oxidizing an oxime of the formula:

R—HC═N—OH  (IB)

where R is defined above, with sodium molybdate in hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a solvent.

2. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the solvent is acetonitrile or acetone.

3. The process according to claim 1 , wherein the reaction is carried out at a pH of from about pH 6.7 to about pH 7.5.

4. The process according to claim 1 , wherein R is alkyl, optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkenyl, optionally substituted cycloalkenyl, aryl and optionally substituted aryl.
