Abstract

According to one embodiment, a connection is established between a first communication device and a second communication device in accordance with one or more communication layers. Each communication layer is associated with a standard structure and protocol. An ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol are determined at the first communication device. The ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol are communicated to the second communication device. One or more of the standard structures and/or protocols are replaced at the first communication device with the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol responsive to the second communication device acknowledging acceptance of the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol.

Claims (27)

1. A communication method, comprising:

establishing a communication connection between a first communication device and a second communication device in accordance with one or more communication layers, each communication layer being associated with a standard structure and protocol used to establish the communication connection between the first and second communication devices;

determining an ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol at the first communication device based on one or more actual operating conditions associated with the connection;

communicating the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol to the second communication device; and

replacing one or more of the standard structures and/or protocols at the first communication device with the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol responsive to the second communication device acknowledging acceptance of the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol.

2. The method of claim 1 , comprising determining the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol based on at least one of channel conditions, bit error rate and data rate associated with the connection.

3. The method of claim 1 , comprising determining the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol for a data link layer associated with the connection.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein determining the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol for the data link layer comprises determining at least one of an ad hoc frame structure and an ad hoc cyclic redundancy check algorithm for the data link layer.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein communicating the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol to the second communication device comprises indicating to the second communication device which of one or more predetermined ad hoc communication layers and/or structures should be used to replace one or more of the standard structures and/or protocols at the second communication device.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein communicating the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol to the second communication device comprises transmitting the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol to the second communication device over a channel of the connection in accordance with the one or more standard structures and protocols.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

communicating the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol to one or more intermediary communication nodes that support the connection; and

replacing one or more of the standard structures and/or protocols at the first communication device with the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol responsive to the second communication device and each intermediary communication node acknowledging acceptance of the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol.

8. A communication device comprising one or more programmable protocol processors configured to:

establish a connection with another communication device in accordance with one or more communication layers, each communication layer being associated with a standard structure and protocol used to establish the communication connection between the first and second communication devices;

determine an ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol based on one or more actual operating conditions associated with the connection;

communicate the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol to the other communication device; and

replace one or more of the standard structures and/or protocols with the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol responsive to the other communication device acknowledging acceptance of the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol.

9. The communication device of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the programmable protocol processors is configured to determine the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol based on at least one of channel conditions, bit error rate and data rate associated with the connection.

10. The communication device of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the programmable protocol processors is configured to determine the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol for a data link layer associated with the connection.

11. The communication device of claim 10 , wherein at least one of the programmable protocol processors is configured to determine at least one of an ad hoc frame structure and an ad hoc cyclic redundancy check algorithm for the data link layer.

12. The communication device of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the programmable protocol processors is configured to indicate which of one or more predetermined ad hoc communication layer structures and/or protocols the other communication device should use to replace one or more of the standard structures and/or protocols.

13. The communication device of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the programmable protocol processors is configured to transmit the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol to the other communication device over a channel of the connection in accordance with the one or more standard structures and protocols.

14. The communication device of claim 8 , wherein at least one of the programmable protocol processors is configured to communicate the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol to one or more intermediary communication nodes that support the connection and replace one or more of the standard structures and/or protocols with the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol responsive to the other communication device and each intermediary communication node acknowledging acceptance of the ad hoc communication layer structure and/or protocol.

15. The communication device of claim 8 , wherein the standard structure and protocol used to establish the communication connection between the first and second communication devices is a VDSL or ADSL communication standard.

16. The communication device of claim 8 , wherein the standard structure and protocol used to establish the communication connection between the first and second communication devices is a 3GPP or WLAN communication standard.

17. The communication device of claim 8 , wherein the standard structure and protocol used to establish the communication connection between the first and second communication devices is an Ethernet or ATM communication standard.
