Abstract

The present invention is a method and apparatus for acoustically manipulating one or more particles. Acoustically manipulated particles may be separated by size. The particles maybe flowed in a flow stream and acoustic radiation pressure, which may be radial, may be applied to the flow stream. This application of acoustic radiation pressure may separate the particles. In one embodiment, the particles may be separated by size, and as a further example, the larger particles may be transported to a central axis.

Claims (30)

1. An apparatus that separates particles by size comprising:

a capillary for flowing a fluid containing the particles therein; and

a radial acoustic signal producing transducer acoustically separating the particles in said capillary by size by applying radial acoustic pressure to the particles, wherein smaller particles are substantially unaffected by the radial acoustic signal producing transducer.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising an imager.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein acoustically separating the particles in said capillary comprises transporting larger particles to a substantially central axis of the capillary.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 further comprising a flow cytometer, wherein the flow cytometer comprises an inlet centered about the substantially central axis of the capillary.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 further comprising a particle sorter associated with the flow cytometer.

6. The apparatus of claim 4 further comprising a particle analyzer associated with the flow cytometer.

7. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the larger particles comprise lymphocytes.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein acoustically separating the particles in said capillary by size is performed without gravity based separation.

9. An apparatus that separates particles by size comprising:

a capillary for flowing a fluid containing the particles therein, the particles comprising larger particles and smaller particles; and

a radial acoustic signal producing transducer acoustically separating the particles in said capillary by size by applying radial acoustic pressure to the particles, wherein smaller particles comprise cellular debris.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 further comprising an imager.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein acoustically separating the particles in said capillary comprises transporting the larger particles to a substantially central axis of the capillary.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the larger particles comprise lymphocytes.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 further comprising a flow cytometer, wherein the flow cytometer comprises an inlet centered about the substantially central axis of the capillary.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 further comprising a particle sorter associated with the flow cytometer.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 further comprising a particle analyzer associated with the flow cytometer.

16. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein acoustically separating the particles in said capillary by size is performed without gravity based separation.

17. An apparatus that separates particles by size comprising:

a capillary for flowing a fluid containing the particles therein, the particles comprising larger particles and smaller particles; and

a radial acoustic signal producing transducer acoustically separating the particles in said capillary by size by applying radial acoustic pressure to the particles, wherein the smaller particles comprise proteins.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 further comprising an imager.

19. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein acoustically separating the particles in said capillary comprises transporting the larger particles to a substantially central axis of the capillary.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 further comprising a flow cytometer, wherein the flow cytometer comprises an inlet centered about the substantially central axis of the capillary.

21. The apparatus of claim 20 further comprising a particle sorter associated with the flow cytometer.

22. The apparatus of claim 20 further comprising a particle analyzer associated with the flow cytometer.

23. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein the larger particles comprise lymphocytes.

24. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein acoustically separating the particles in said capillary by size is performed without gravity based separation.
