Abstract

An automated banking machine ( 10 ) operates responsive to data bearing records. Users of the machine may deliver and receive records including individual sheets and stacks of sheets to and from the machine such as notes, checks or other documents. Notes assessed by the machine as being of questionable validity may be marked with a removable mark or otherwise identified.

Claims (20)

1. A method of operating an automated banking machine, wherein the machine operates responsive to data included on data bearing records, comprising:

(a) determining through operation of the automated banking machine that a currency note received by the machine has at least one property corresponding to note validity that is unacceptable to the machine;

(b) responsive to the determining in step (a), generating unique identifying information relating to the note through operation of the machine, wherein the identifying information is generated responsive to a plurality of readable indicating marks on the note, and wherein the identifying information is unique from identifying information for all other notes received by the machine.

2. The method according to claim 1 and further comprising:

(c) marking the note with at least one readable mark through operation of the machine.

3. The method according to claim 2 wherein (c) includes marking the note with at least one removable mark.

4. The method according to claim 2 wherein (c) includes marking the note with at least one permanent mark.

5. The method according to claim 1 wherein in (b) the plurality of readable indicating marks include at least one character in a serial number on the note.

6. The method according to claim 1 wherein in (b) the plurality of readable indicating marks do not include a serial number on the note.

7. The method according to claim 1 wherein in (b) the unique identifying information is generated through operation of the machine as at least one function of the plurality of readable indicating marks.

8. The method according to claim 1 wherein in (a) the at least one property corresponds to a note of suspect validity.

9. The method according to claim 1 wherein in (a) the at least one property corresponds to a counterfeit note.

10. A method of operating an automated banking machine, wherein the automated banking machine is operable to read user data from data bearing records, wherein the automated banking machine is operable during a transaction responsive at least in part to read user data, and wherein the automated banking machine is operable during a transaction to receive at least one currency note from a user of the automated banking machine, comprising:

(a) determining through operation of the automated banking machine that at least one currency note received by the machine has at least one validity property corresponding to a suspect currency note that is unacceptable to the machine; and

(b) responsive at least in part to the determining in step (a), generating for each respective suspect currency note received, respective unique identifying information relating to the respective suspect currency note through operation of the machine, wherein the respective unique identifying information is generated responsive at least in part to a plurality of readable indicating marks on the respective suspect currency note, wherein each respective unique identifying information generated uniquely differs for each respective suspect currency note received by the machine.

11. The method according to claim 10 and further comprising:

(c) marking each respective suspect currency note received with at least one readable mark through operation of the machine.

12. The method according to claim 11 wherein (c) includes marking each respective suspect currency note with a plurality of readable indicating marks through operation of the machine.

13. The method according to claim 12 wherein in (c) each readable indicating mark is a removable mark.

14. The method according to claim 10 wherein (b) includes generating the unique identifying information as a function of the plurality of readable indicating marks.
