Abstract

An automated banking machine that operates responsive to data read from data bearing records has sensing devices adjacent a card reader slot. The sensing devices enable detection of a fraudulent card reading device.

Claims (44)

1. A method carried out through operation of an automated banking machine, wherein the automated banking machine operates responsive to data read from data bearing records, comprising:

(a) operating the automated banking machine to sense an undetermined object adjacent thereto; and

(b) responsive to sensing the undetermined object in step (a), operating the machine to provide at least one output requesting machine user input regarding visual appearance of the machine.

2. The method according to claim 1 and further comprising:

(c) receiving machine user input with the machine responsive to step (b); and

(d) responsive to the machine user input received in step (c), operating the machine to determine whether the object sensed in step (a) is an unauthorized card reader device.

3. The method according to claim 2 and further comprising:

(e) responsive to determining an unauthorized card reader device in step (d), operating the machine to write data to a user card, wherein the card is unusable to cause the machine to carry out at least one transaction without the data.

4. The method according to claim 2 and further comprising:

(e) responsive to determining an unauthorized card reader device in step (d), operating the machine to display a warning advising a machine user that an unauthorized card reader device has been detected.

5. The method according to claim 1 wherein the machine includes a card reader slot and a display device, wherein step (b) includes prompting a machine user via the display device to provide at least one input indicating whether an item adjacent to the card reader slot is visible to the machine user.

6. The method according to claim 5 wherein the machine includes an illuminating device adjacent to the card reader slot, wherein step (b) includes asking the machine user whether the illuminating device is visible.

7. The method according to claim 1 wherein the machine includes a cash dispenser and a card reader device, and wherein step (a) occurs during at least a portion of a transaction including reading data from a user card by the card reader device.

8. A method carried out through operation of an automated banking machine, wherein the automated banking machine operates responsive to data read from data bearing records,

comprising:

(a) operating the automated banking machine to detect at least one object that is not a part of the machine, adjacent to at least one user input location on the machine;

(b) operating the machine responsive to detecting the at least one object in (a), to provide at least one output through an output device of the machine to a machine user, wherein the at least one output includes indicia including at least one query regarding visual appearance of the machine.

9. The method according to claim 8 wherein in (b) the at least one output includes indicia prompting at least one user input through at least one input device on the machine responsive to the at least one output,

and further comprising:

(c) receiving at lest one input through at least one input device of the machine responsive to the at least one output in (b).

10. The method according to claim 9 and further comprising:

(d) responsive to receiving the at least one input in (c) operating the automated banking machine to cause a determination to be made that an unauthorized device has been installed on the machine.

11. The method according to claim 10 and further comprising:

(e) operating the automated banking machine to carry out at least one action in response to the determination in (d).

12. The method according to claim 11 wherein the machine includes a card reader operative to read data from user cards, and wherein the card reader has an associated card reader slot, wherein a card read through operation of the card reader moves through the slot,

wherein in (a) the at least one user input location is adjacent the card reader slot.

13. The method according to claim 12 wherein the machine includes at least one radiation emitter and at least one radiation sensor adjacent to the card reader slot,

wherein (a) includes operating the at least one emitter to output radiation and sensing radiation from the at least one emitter with the at least one sensor.

14. The method according to claim 12 wherein in (b) the at least one query corresponds to visibility of illumination adjacent to the card reader slot.

15. The method according to claim 14 wherein (e) includes at least one of outputting a warning message through at least one output device of the machine, operating the machine to cause data to be written on a card input to the machine by a machine user, and holding a machine user card within the machine.

16. Apparatus comprising:

an automated banking machine that operates responsive to data bearing records, including:

a card reader slot, wherein cards from which data is read by the machine move in the slot,

at least one sensor adjacent the card reader slot,

at least one display,

at least one controller, wherein the at least one controller is in operative connection with the at least one sensor and the at least one display,

wherein the at least one controller is operative responsive to sensing at least one object through operation of the at least one sensor, to cause at least one output through the display, wherein the at least one output includes indicia corresponding to at least one request for user input to the machine regarding visual appearance of the machine.

17. The apparatus according to claim 16 wherein the machine further includes at least one emitter of visible radiation adjacent to the card reader slot, wherein the at least one emitter is in operative connection with the at least one controller,

wherein the at least one controller is operative to cause the at least one emitter to illuminate, and wherein the at least one output includes indicia corresponding to at least one query concerning visibility of illumination.

18. The apparatus according to claim 17 wherein the at least one controller is operative to determine presence of an unauthorized card reading device adjacent the card reader slot responsive to sensing radiation from the at least one emitter through operation of the at least one sensor, and wherein the at least one controller is operative to cause the at least one output from the display responsive to the determination.

19. The apparatus according to claim 18 and further comprising;

at least one input device on the machine, wherein the at least one input device is in operative connection with the at least one controller, wherein the at least one input device is operative to receive manual inputs, and

wherein the at least one controller is operative responsive to receiving at least one input through the at least one input device responsive to the at least one output, to cause the machine to take at least one action.

20. The apparatus according to claim 19 wherein the at least one action includes at least one of outputting a warning message through the display, causing data to be written to a user card and holding a user card within the machine.
