Abstract

An offshore universal riser system. A riser system includes a valve module which selectively permits and prevents fluid flow through a flow passage extending longitudinally through a riser string. An anchoring device releasably secures the valve module in the flow passage. A method of constructing a riser system includes the steps of installing the valve module in the flow passage, and installing at least one annular seal module in the flow passage. The annular seal module is operative to prevent fluid flow through an annular space between the riser string and a tubular string positioned in the flow passage. Drilling methods include injecting relatively low density fluid compositions into the annular space, and selectively varying a restriction to flow through a subsea choke in a drilling fluid return line. The riser string, including housings for the various modules and external control systems, is dimensioned for installation through a rotary table.

Claims (14)

1. A riser system, comprising:

a riser string extending between a blowout preventer stack and a diverter, wherein the riser string guides a tubular string into a wellbore;

a valve module housing comprising a section of the riser string, and interconnected in the riser string, wherein the housing forms a longitudinal portion of the riser string; and

a valve module releasably secured and sealed within the housing, the valve module selectively permitting and preventing fluid flow through the riser string, wherein at least one of the housing and the valve module includes a first anchoring device which releasably secures the valve module within the housing, thereby permitting installation and retrieval of the valve module while the housing remains interconnected in the riser string.

2. The riser system of claim 1 , further comprising a second anchoring device which releasably secures the tubular string in the riser string.

3. The riser system of claim 2 , wherein the second anchoring device prevents displacement of the tubular string relative to the riser string when pressure is increased in a portion of the riser string between the valve module and a seal between the tubular string and the riser string.

The riser system of claim 2 , further comprising at least one annular seal module which seals an annular space between the riser string and the tubular string, and wherein the second anchoring device prevents displacement of the tubular string relative to the riser string when pressure is increased in a portion of the riser string between the valve module and the annular seal module.

5. The riser system of claim 1 , further comprising at least one annular seal module which seals an annular space between the riser string and the tubular string.

6. The riser system of claim 5 , wherein the annular seal module includes at least one seal which seals against the tubular string while the tubular string rotates within the riser string.

7. The riser system of claim 6 , wherein the seal rotates with the tubular string.

8. The riser system of claim 6 , wherein the seal remains stationary within the riser string while the tubular string rotates within the seal.

9. The riser system of claim 6 , wherein the seal is selectively radially extendable into sealing contact with the tubular string.

10. The riser system of claim 1 , wherein the first anchoring device is actuated from a subsea location exterior to the riser string.

11. The riser system of claim 1 , further comprising at least one sensor which senses at least one parameter for monitoring operation of the valve module.
