Abstract

An airbag is disclosed that comprises a first fabric layer, a second fabric layer, and an adhesive. The first and second fabric layers are coated with silicone elastomer coatings. The adhesive is a heat-cured silicone adhesive, and forms a seam-bond between the first and second layers such that a bag-like structure is created.

Claims (26)

1. An airbag comprising:

a first fabric layer coated with a first silicone elastomer coating;

a second fabric layer coated with a second silicone elastomer coating; and

a heat-cured silicone adhesive, wherein the heat-cured silicone adhesive forms a seam-bond between the first and second layers such that a bag-like structure is created,

wherein the bag-like structure is configured to be a curtain airbag with a non-sewn periphery.

2. The airbag according to claim 1 , wherein the heat-cured silicone adhesive directly adheres to the first coated fabric layer and the second coated fabric layer.

3. The airbag according to claim 1 , wherein the heat-cured silicone adhesive has sufficient strength such that the bag-like structure does not rupture upon deployment of the airbag in an event of a crash.

4. The airbag according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second coated fabric layers are solely attached to each other by the heat-cured silicon adhesive.

5. The airbag according to claim 1 , wherein the heat-cured silicone adhesive comprises is an addition-cure type with a platinum hydrosilation chemistry.

6. The airbag according to claim 1 , wherein adhesive strength of the seam-bond is between 96 lbs min. and 120 lbs. min.

7. The airbag according to claim 1 , where the heat-cured silicone adhesive is an elevated temperature accelerated cure silicon adhesive.

8. The airbag according to claim 1 , where the heat-cured silicon adhesive is configured to be cured between 50 and 190° C.

9. An occupant safety module, comprising:

a gas inflator; and

a curtain airbag in fluid communication with the gas inflator, wherein the curtain airbag comprises:

a first fabric layer coated with a first silicone elastomer coating;

a second fabric layer coated with a second silicone elastomer coating; and

a heat-cured silicone adhesive,

wherein the heat-cured silicone adhesive forms a seam-bond between the first and second layers such that a bag-like structure is created,

wherein the curtain airbag has a non-sewn periphery.

10. The occupant safety module according to claim 9 , wherein the heat-cured silicone adhesive has sufficient strength such that the bag-like structure does not rupture upon deployment of the airbag in an event of a crash.

11. The occupant safety module according to claim 9 , wherein the first and second coated fabric layers are solely attached to each other by the heat-cured silicon adhesive.

12. The occupant safety module according to claim 9 , wherein the heat-cured silicone adhesive is an addition-cure type with a platinum hydrosilation chemistry.

13. The occupant safety module according to claim 9 , wherein adhesive strength of the seam-bond is between 96 lbs min. and 120 lbs. min.

14. The occupant safety module according to claim 9 , where the heat-cured silicone adhesive is an elevated temperature accelerated cure silicon adhesive.

15. The occupant safety module according to claim 9 , where the heat-cured silicon adhesive is configured to be cured between 50 and 190° C.
