Abstract

Backing up data from a client includes providing a direct coupling between the client and a portable storage device, copying full backup data from the client to the portable storage device using the direct coupling, and performing at least one incremental backup from the client to the backup site through a network that is separate from the direct coupling. The at least one incremental backup is based on the prior full backup. The network may be the Internet. Following copying full backup data to the portable storage device, the portable storage device may be shipped from the client to the backup site. The direct coupling may be USB, Firewire, or eSATA. Only a subset of data corresponding to a backup dataset may be copied from the client to the portable storage device.

initiating a network operation to copy the full backup data from the client to the backup site via the network, wherein:

if the network operation to copy the full backup data to the backup site via the network is completed before the portable storage device with the full backup data is coupled to the backup site, then the full backup data obtained via the network operation is stored on the backup site; and

if the portable storage device with the full backup data is coupled to the backup site before the network operation to copy the full backup data via the network is completed, then the full backup data is copied from the portable storage device to the backup site using the second direct coupling; and

after copying the full backup data to the backup site, performing at least one incremental backup from the client to the backup site through the network, wherein the at least one incremental backup is based on at least one difference between data on the client site and the prior full backup data on the backup site.

2. A method, according to claim 1 , wherein the network is the Internet.

3. A method, according to claim 1 , wherein following copying full backup data to the portable storage device, the portable storage device is shipped from the client to the backup site.

4. A method, according to claim 1 , wherein the first direct coupling is one of: USB, Firewire, and eSATA.

5. A method, according to claim 1 , wherein only a subset of data corresponding to a backup dataset is copied from the client to the portable storage device.

6. A method, according to claim 1 , wherein prior to copying full backup data to the portable storage device, the portable storage device is shipped from the backup site to the client.

7. A method, according to claim 6 , wherein a user at the client orders the portable storage device.

8. A method, according to claim 6 , wherein prior to the portable storage device being shipped, the portable storage device is correlated with the client.

9. A method, according to claim 8 , wherein prior to copying full backup data to the portable storage device, the correlation between the portable storage device and the client is confirmed.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein, if the portable storage device with the full backup data is coupled to the backup site before the network operation to copy the full backup data via the network is completed, then the network operation is ended.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein, if the portable storage device with the full backup data is coupled to the backup site before the network operation to copy the full backup data via the network is completed, then the network operation is continued, and upon completion of the network operation, a comparison is performed between the full backup data obtained from the network and the full backup data obtained from the portable storage device, and whichever version of the full backup data is newest is used for the subsequent incremental backup.

12. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing software that backs up data from a client, the software comprising:

executable code that copies full backup data from the client to a portable storage device using a first direct coupling between the client and the portable storage device;

executable code that couples the portable storage device to a backup site using a second direct coupling, wherein the client and the backup site are connected via a network that is separate from each of the first direct coupling and the second direct coupling; and

executable code that initiates a network operation to copy the full backup data from the client to the backup site via the network, wherein:

if the network operation to copy the full backup data to the backup site via the network is completed before the portable storage device with the full backup data is coupled to the backup site, then the full backup data obtained via the network operation is stored on the backup site; and

if the portable storage device with the full backup data is coupled to the backup site before the network operation to copy the full backup data via the network is completed, then the full backup data is copied from the portable storage device to the backup site using the second direct coupling; and

executable code that, after the full backup data is copied to the backup site, performs at least one incremental backup from the client to the backup site through the network, wherein the at least one incremental backup is based on at least one difference between data on the client site and the prior full backup data on the backup site.

13. The non-transitory computer readable medium, according to claim 12 , wherein the network is the Internet.

14. The non-transitory computer readable medium, according to claim 12 , wherein the direct coupling is one of: USB, Firewire, and eSATA.

15. The non-transitory computer readable medium, according to claim 12 , wherein only a subset of data corresponding to a backup dataset is copied from the client to the portable storage device.

16. The non-transitory computer readable medium, according to claim 12 , wherein the software further comprises:

executable code that correlates the portable storage device with the client.

17. The non-transitory computer readable medium, according to claim 16 , wherein the software further comprises:

executable code that confirms the correlation between the portable storage device and the client.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium, according to claim 12 , wherein executable code that copies full backup data to the portable storage device is provided by an agent that is part of the client.

19. The non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 12 , wherein, if the portable storage device with the full backup data is coupled to the backup site before the network operation to copy the full backup data via the network is completed, then the network operation is ended.

20. The non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 12 , wherein, if the portable storage device with the full backup data is coupled to the backup site before the network operation to copy the full backup data via the network is completed, then the network operation is continued, and upon completion of the network operation, a comparison is performed between the full backup data obtained from the network and the full backup data obtained from the portable storage device, and whichever version of the full backup data is newest is used for the subsequent incremental backup.

21. A system that backs up data at a client, comprising:

a backup site;

at least one client, coupled to a network to communicate with the backup site via the network; and

a portable storage device that receives full backup data from the client via a first direct coupling and that is couplable to the backup site via a second direct coupling, wherein the first direct coupling and the second direct coupling are each separate from the network,

a computer readable medium storing software that initiates a network operation to copy the full backup data from the client to the backup site via the network, wherein:

if the network operation to copy the full backup data to the backup site via the network is completed before the portable storage device with the full backup data is coupled to the backup site, then the full backup data obtained via the network operation is stored on the backup site; and
