Instruments and methods for inserting artificial intervertebral implants
View Patent ↗Apparatus and methods for preparing a disc space and inserting an intervertebral disc implant therein are disclosed. Among the various instruments disclosed are a midline marker, a reference pin drill and insertion guide, a fin drill guide, a chisel guide, a sizer, a serrated broach, an implant dispenser, and an implant insertion tool. Methods of utilizing these tools are also disclosed.
1. An insertion tool for inserting an intervertebral disc implant between first and second vertebral bodies comprising:
an inserter body having a first slot; and
an inserter head integrally connected with the inserter body, the inserter head including:
a second slot;
a first arm including a first inwardly facing surface having a first projection extending transversely therefrom and a first vertebral body stop adapted to abut against the first vertebral body to prevent over-insertion of the intervertebral disc implant during insertion, the first projection adapted to engage a first depression of the intervertebral disc implant;
a second arm including a second inwardly facing surface having a second projection extending transversely therefrom and a second vertebral body stop adapted to abut against the first vertebral body to prevent over-insertion of the intervertebral disc implant during insertion, the second projection adapted to engage a second depression of the intervertebral disc implant;
a raised upper alignment groove extending along a longitudinal axis of the insertion tool; and
a raised lower alignment groove extending along the longitudinal axis,
wherein the first and second slots form a first continuous slot and the upper and lower alignment grooves are tapered with respect to each other.
2. The insertion tool of claim 1 , further comprising a third arm and a fourth arm.
3. The insertion tool of claim 2 , wherein the third arm includes a third projection adapted to engage a third depression of the intervertebral disc implant, and the fourth arm includes a fourth projection adapted to engage a fourth depression of the intervertebral disc implant.
4. The insertion tool of claim 3 , wherein the inserter body includes a third slot and the inserter head includes a fourth slot, the third and fourth slots forming a second continuous slot.
5. The insertion tool of claim 4 , wherein the first and second arms are capable of moving with respect to each other and the third and fourth arms are capable of moving with respect to each other.
6. The insertion tool of claim 5 , wherein the first continuous slot is in communication with a first aperture and the second continuous slot is in communication with a second aperture.
7. The insertion tool of claim 1 , further comprising an insertion tool handle.
8. The insertion tool of claim 7 , wherein the insertion tool handle includes a plunger rod extending therethrough.
9. The insertion tool of claim 8 , wherein the plunger rod includes a knob having a contact surface for moving the plunger rod within the insertion tool handle.
10. The insertion tool of claim 1 , wherein the upper and lower alignment grooves each include a floor surface, the floor surfaces extending along a length of the longitudinal axis of the insertion tool and being angled with respect to one another.
11. The insertion tool of claim 10 , wherein the floor surfaces are adapted to contact respective rods so that the rods are distracted as the insertion tool is moved towards the first and second vertebral bodies.
