Abstract

Disclosed is a multi-mode communication notification system and method for improving communication between an inmate and a third party by enabling a third party to send a web-initiated contact request for a specific inmate and further allowing the inmate to check his/her contact requests or be automatically notified of contact requests. Additionally, the system electronically notifies the third party when the specific inmate has been notified of the contact request. Further, the system notifies the third party if they have missed a call from the specific inmate.

Claims (44)

1. A call management system for a correctional institute that provides web-initiated contact requests, the system comprising:

a telephonic instrument located at the correctional institute;

a routing means coupled to the telephonic instrument and configured for routing telephonic communications to and from the telephonic instrument, the telephonic communications being between a local user using the telephonic instrument and a remote user located outside the correctional institute; and

a control platform configured for monitoring, recording, controlling, storing, and billing related to the telephonic communications, the control platform comprising one or more processors and/or circuits configured to:

authenticate the remote user for use of the call management system;

transmit a list of predetermined contact request messages via a network connection to a remote device used by the remote user, the predetermined contact request messages indicating a designated message from the remote user to the local user in response to an attempt by the local user to have a telephonic communication with the remote user;

receive from the remote device via the network connection a selection of one of the predetermined contact request messages that is designated for the local user;

in response to receiving the selection from the remote device, store the selected predetermined contact request message for later retrieval; and

in response to the telephonic instrument used by the local user receiving the selected predetermined contact request message, notify, with a user-readable message, the remote user that the local user has received the selected predetermined contact request message.

2. The call management system according to claim 1 , wherein the control platform is further configured to transmit to the remote user electronic communications indicative of a contact request.

3. The call management system according to claim 1 , wherein the control platform further comprises a web server in communication with the remote device.

4. The call management system according to claim 3 , wherein the control platform utilizes the web server to transmit the list of predetermined contact request messages to the remote device and receive from the remote device the selection of one of the predetermined contact request messages.

5. The call management system according to claim 1 , wherein the control platform is further configured to convert the contact request to an audio message for playback by the telephonic instrument for the local user.

6. The call management system according to claim 1 , wherein the call management system further comprises an interactive voice response communications system.

7. A call management system for a correctional institute that provides web-initiated contact requests, said system comprising:

a network connection;

a telephonic instrument located at the correctional institute; and

a control platform configured for monitoring, recording, controlling, storing, and billing related to telephonic communications between a local user using the telephonic instrument and a remote user located outside of the correctional institute, the control platform comprising one or more processors and/or circuits configured to:

authenticate the remote user for use of the call management system;

receive, at a remote device, a list of predetermined contact request message via a network connection;

receive from the remote device via the network connection a web-initiated contact request selected by the remote user from the list of predetermined contact request messages that is addressed to the local user, the contact request being a designated message from the remote user to the local user in response to an attempt by the local user to have a telephonic communication with the remote user;

store the contact request;

provide the contact request to the telephonic instrument used by the local user in response to the local user accessing the call management system via the telephonic instrument; and

notify, with a user-readable message, the remote user in response to the local user accessing the call management system via the telephonic instrument and being provided with the contact request.

8. The call management system of claim 7 , further comprising an apparatus for converting the contact request to an audio message before it is provided to the local user.

9. The call management system of claim 7 , wherein the user-readable message is in one of an e-mail format, a Short Message Service format, or an instant messaging format.

10. The call management system of claim 7 , further comprising an accounting system configured to bill an appropriate account for each institutional web-initiated contact request.

11. The call management system of claim 10 , wherein the accounting system is further configured to accrue fees for each institutional web-initiated contact request and periodically bill the appropriate account for all institutional web-initiated contact requests within a period of time.

12. The call management system of claim 10 , wherein the accounting system is further configured to authenticate the remote user using biometric voiceprint identification.

13. The call management system of claim 7 , wherein the user-readable message includes a notification that the local user has been notified of the contact request.

14. A computer-implemented method for a correctional institute to provide web-initiated contact requests by way of a call management system, the method comprising:

configuring the call management system for monitoring, recording, controlling, storing, and billing related to telephonic communications between a local user using a telephonic instrument and a remote user located outside of the correctional institute;

authenticating the remote user for use of the call management system;

transmitting, by way of a network connection, a list of predetermined contact request messages to a remote device located outside of the correctional institute and used by the remote user;

receiving from the remote device, by way of the network connection, a contact request message selected, by the remote user, from the list of predetermined contact request messages, the contact request message being a designated message from the remote user to the local user in response to an attempt by the local user to have a telephonic communication with the remote user;

in response to receiving the contact request message from the remote device, storing the contact request message;

providing an interface for the local user to retrieve the stored contact request message, the interface accessible via the telephonic instrument;

delivering the stored contact request message to the local user via the interface; and

in response to the local user receiving the contact request message, transmitting a notification with a user-readable message to the remote user indicating that the local user has received the contact request message.

15. The method of claim 14 , further comprising authenticating the remote user prior to presenting the list of predetermined contact request messages to the remote device.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising establishing a new account for the remote user when the remote user does not have an account prior to the authenticating.

17. The method of claim 15 , further comprising authenticating the remote user with biometric voiceprint recognition.

18. The method of claim 14 , further comprising charging a fee for each call request initiated by the remote user.

19. The call management system according to claim 6 , wherein the interactive voice response communications system is configured to provide an interactive method to transmit the list of predetermined contact request messages to the remote user and receive from the remote user a selection of one of the predetermined contact request messages.
