Abstract

An approach provides a satellite air interface to efficiently support communication with a terrestrial network. One or more packets associated with a data communication session are received from a terrestrial network configured to provide cellular communications. A frame representing the packet for transmission is generated over a satellite link to a user terminal. Signaling information for the transmission of the packet over the terrestrial network is modified or eliminated for transmission over the satellite link.

Claims (31)

1. A method comprising:

generating, by a communication session module of a first communications terminal, context information relating to a communication session of a communications network, wherein the communication session comprises a session initiation phase for the establishment of the communication session and a session data phase for the flow of session data packets, and transmitting the context information over a satellite link of the communications network for receipt by a second communications terminal, wherein the generation and transmission of the context information occurs prior to start of the session data phase and receipt of the session data packets by the communication session module;

receiving, by the communication session module, the session data packets, wherein each of the session data packets includes at least one header comprising one or more of real time transfer protocol (RTP), user datagram protocol and internet protocol (IP) header information; and

generating, by the communication session module, data frames representing the session data packets for transmission over the satellite link, wherein the generation of the data frames includes stripping at least a portion of the at least one header from each of the session data packets, and transmitting the generated data frames over the satellite link;

wherein the context information is configured to facilitate regeneration, by the second communications terminal, of the at least a portion of the at least one header stripped from the session data packets.

2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the data communication session comprises one of a telephony session, a paging session, a messaging session, and a broadband data session.

3. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the data communication session comprises a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) session, and the session data packets comprise voice data packets of the VoIP session.

4. An apparatus comprising:

a processor configured to generate context information relating to a communication session of a communications network, and a transmitter configured to transmit the context information over a satellite link of the communications network for receipt by a second communications terminal, wherein the communication session comprises a session initiation phase for the establishment of the communication session and a session data phase for the flow of session data packets, and wherein the generation and transmission of the context information occurs prior to start of the session data phase and receipt of the session data packets by the processor;

wherein the processor is further configured to receive the session data packets, wherein each of the session data packets includes at least one header comprising one or more of real time transfer protocol (RTP), user datagram protocol and internet protocol (IP) header information, and to generate data frames representing the session data packets for transmission over the satellite link, wherein the generation of the data frames includes stripping at least a portion of the at least one header from each of the session data packets; and

wherein the transmitter is further configured to transmit the generated data frames over the satellite link, and

wherein the context information is configured to facilitate regeneration, by the second communications terminal, of the at least a portion of the at least one header stripped from the session data packets.

5. An apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the data communication session comprises one of a telephony session, a paging session, a messaging session, and a broadband data session.

6. An apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the data communication session comprises a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) session, and the session data packets comprise voice data packets of the VoIP session.

7. A method comprising:

receiving, by a second communications terminal, context information over a satellite link of a communications network, wherein the context information relates to a communication session of the communications network, wherein the communication session comprises a session initiation phase for the establishment of the communication session and a session data phase for the flow of session data packets, and wherein the context information is received prior to start of the session data phase and the flow of the session data packets within a first communications terminal;

receiving, by the second communications terminal, one or more data frames over the satellite link, wherein the data frames represent the session data packets, wherein at least a portion of at least one header was stripped from each of the session data packets, by the first communications terminal, prior to transmission of the data frames over the satellite link, and wherein the at least one header comprises one or more of real time transfer protocol (RTP), user datagram protocol, and internet protocol (IP) header information;

restoring, by the second communications terminal, the session data packets by regenerating, based on the context information, the at least a portion of the at least one header stripped from each of the session data packets and adding the regenerated headers to data contained within the received data frames.

8. A method according to claim 7 , wherein the data communications session comprises one of a telephony session, a paging session, a messaging session, and a broadband data session.

9. A method according to claim 7 , wherein the data communications session comprises a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) session, and the session data packets comprise voice data packets of the VoIP session.

10. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the first communications terminal comprises a wireless mobile user terminal.

11. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the communications network comprises a mobile satellite communications network, and the first communications terminal comprises a mobile satellite user terminal.

12. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the second communications terminal, the data frames transmitted over the satellite link;

restoring the session data packets by regenerating, based on the context information, the at least a portion of the at least one header stripped from each of the session data packets prior to the transmission of the data frames over the satellite link.

13. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the first communications terminal comprises a wireless mobile user terminal, and the second communications terminal comprises a wireless gateway component of the communications network.

14. A method according to claim 13 , wherein the communications network comprises a mobile satellite communications network, the first communications terminal comprises a mobile satellite user terminal, and the second communications terminal comprises a satellite gateway component interfacing the satellite communications channel with a terrestrial gateway component of the communications network.

15. An apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the apparatus comprises a wireless mobile user terminal.

16. An apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the communications network comprises a mobile satellite communications network, and the apparatus comprises a mobile satellite user terminal.

17. A method according to claim 7 , wherein the second communications terminal comprises a wireless gateway component of the communications network.

18. A method according to claim 7 , wherein the communications network comprises a mobile satellite communications network, and the second communications terminal comprises a wireless gateway component of the communications network.
