Abstract

Isolated polynucleotides and polypeptides and recombinant DNA constructs useful for conferring drought tolerance, compositions (such as plants or seeds) comprising these recombinant DNA constructs, and methods utilizing these recombinant DNA constructs. The recombinant DNA construct comprises a polynucleotide operably linked to a promoter that is functional in a plant, wherein said polynucleotide encodes a ferrochelatase.

Claims (11)

1. An isolated polynucleotide comprising:

(a) a nucleotide sequence encoding a polypeptide with ferrochelatase activity, wherein the polypeptide has an amino acid sequence of at least 92% sequence identity, based on the Clustal V method of alignment with pairwise alignment default parameters of KTUPLE=1, GAP PENALTY=3, WINDOW=5 and DIAGONALS SAVED=5, when compared to SEQ ID NO:6, or

(b) the full complement of the nucleotide sequence of (a).

2. The polynucleotide of claim 1 , wherein the polypeptide has an amino acid sequence of at least 95% sequence identity, based on the Clustal V method of alignment with the pairwise alignment default parameters, when compared to SEQ ID NO:6.

3. The polynucleotide of claim 1 , wherein the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide comprises SEQ ID NO:6.

4. The polynucleotide of claim 1 wherein the nucleotide sequence comprises SEQ ID NO:5.

5. A vector comprising the polynucleotide of claim 1 .

6. A recombinant DNA construct comprising the isolated polynucleotide of claim 1 operably linked to at least one regulatory sequence.

7. A cell comprising the recombinant DNA construct of claim 6 , wherein the cell is selected from the group consisting of a bacterial cell, a yeast cell, and insect cell and a plant cell.

8. A plant or seed comprising the recombinant DNA construct of claim 6 .

9. The plant or seed of claim 8 wherein the plant or seed is selected from the group consisting of: maize, soybean, sunflower, sorghum, canola, wheat, alfalfa, cotton, rice, barley or millet.
