User interface methods and systems for selecting and presenting content based on user navigation and selection actions associated with the content
View Patent ↗A user-interface method of selecting and presenting a collection of content items based on user navigation and selection actions associated with the content is provided. The method includes associating a relevance weight on a per user basis with content items to indicate a relative measure of likelihood that the user desires the content item. The method includes receiving a user's navigation and selections actions for identifying desired content items, and in response, adjusting the associated relevance weight of the selected content item and group of content items containing the selected item. The method includes, in response to subsequent user input, selecting and presenting a subset of content items and content groups to the user ordered by the adjusted associated relevance weights assigned to the content items and content groups.
1. A user-interface method of selecting and presenting a collection of items in which the presentation is ordered at least in part based on navigation and selection behavior of a user learned over time, the method comprising:
providing a set of items, each item having an associated relevance weight on a per user basis to indicate a relative measure of a likelihood that the item is desired by the user;
providing an initial associated relevance weight to each item;
receiving input entered by the user for identifying desired items;
in response to the input entered by the user, selecting and presenting a subset of items to the user as a navigable topology of items wherein the items are ordered at least in part by the initial associated relevance weights assigned to the items;
receiving input entered by the user for navigating through the topology of the subset of items and for identifying and selecting the desired items;
in response to a selection by the user of an item, presenting said item to the user and adjusting the associated relevance weight of said item;
in response to receiving subsequent input entered by the user, selecting and presenting a subset of items to the user wherein the items are ordered at least in part by the adjusted associated relevance weights assigned to the items such that items with greater associated relevance weights are presented as more relevant items.
2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
for at least a portion of the items of the set, associating information with each item that describes said item; and
in response to the selection by the user of the selected item, adjusting the associated relevance weights of other items of the set that are associated with descriptive information that matches a portion of the descriptive information associated with the selected item.
3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the set of items includes audio / video content items and the information that describes the audio / video content items includes a genre of the audio / video content items.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of items includes audio / video content items.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of items includes executable actions.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of items includes executable applications.
7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set of items includes a mix of audio / video content items, executable actions, and executable applications.
8. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the input and the subsequent input are entered by the user on an input constrained device.
9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the input constrained device has a plurality of overloaded keys, each of the overloaded keys representing two or more characters.
10. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the input and the subsequent input are entered by the user on at least one of a hand-held computing device, a telephone, a PDA, and a remote control.
11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the user is identified based on identity information associated with a device used to enter at least one of the input and the subsequent input.
12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subset of items is presented on a display constrained device.
13. A user-interface method of presenting a collection of items in which the presentation is ordered at least in part based on navigation and selection behavior of a user learned over time, the method comprising:
providing a set of items, each item having an associated relevance weight on a per user basis to indicate a relative measure of a likelihood that the item is desired by the user;
providing an initial associated relevance weight to each item;
receiving input entered by the user for selecting a desired item;
determining a context in which the user performed the selection actions, the context including at least one of geographic location of the user, day, date, and time;
in response to the selection by the user of the item, adjusting the associated relevance weight of said item and associating the context of the user selection action with the adjusted relevance weighting of said item learned from the corresponding user selection; and
in response to a subsequent reoccurrence of the context in which the user performed the selection actions, identifying and presenting a subset of items to the user wherein the items are identified and ordered at least in part by the adjusted relevance weights assigned to the items that are associated with the context that has reoccurred such that items with greater associated relevance weights are presented as more relevant items.
14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the day context is at least one of day of the week, day of the month, and day of the year.
15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the set of items includes audio / video content items.
16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the set of items includes executable actions.
17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the set of items includes executable applications.
18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the set of items includes a mix of audio / video content items, executable actions, and executable applications.
19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the selection actions are entered by the user on an input constrained device.
20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the input constrained device has a plurality of overloaded keys, each of the overloaded keys representing two or more characters.
21. The method of claim 13 , wherein the selection actions are entered by the user on at least one of a hand-held computing device, a telephone, a PDA, and a remote control.
22. The method of claim 13 , wherein the user is identified based on identity information associated with a device used to enter the selection actions.
23. The method of claim 13 , wherein the subset of items is presented on a display constrained device.
24. The method of claim 13 , wherein the adjusted associated relevance weights are decayed as time passes from the act of adjusting the associated relevance weights.
25. The method of claim 13 , wherein the adjusted associated relevance weights are decayed based upon the number of user selections occurring after the act of adjusting the associated relevance weights.
