Abstract

A golf ball having a plurality of dimples on its surface based on a dimple pattern determined by circle packing theory. In particular, the dimple pattern is determined by arranging a plurality of circles on a Riemann surface where each circle is not tangent to any other circle in more than one place.

Claims (34)

1. A method of forming a golf ball having a surface comprising a plurality of dimples comprising the steps of:

defining a first portion of the surface in which the plurality of dimples will be arranged;

determining a dimple pattern for the first portion based on circle packing theory and a predetermined number of fixed circle positions, wherein at least about 80 percent of the surface is covered with dimples, wherein substantially all of the dimples are mutually tangent to at least three neighboring dimples;

arranging the dimples on the first portion of the surface; and

forming a golf ball cover on the golf ball comprising the dimple pattern.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of determining a dimple pattern is based on circles having substantially similar diameters.

3. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising repeating the pattern on other portions of the golf ball.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first portion comprises the entire surface of the golf ball including the equator.

5. A method of forming a golf ball having a surface comprising a plurality of dimples comprising the steps of:

defining a first portion of the surface in which the plurality of dimples will be arranged;

determining a dimple pattern for the first portion based on circle packing theory and a predetermined number of different circle diameters;

arranging the dimples on the first portion of the surface; and

forming a golf ball cover on the golf ball comprising the dimple pattern.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein substantially all of the dimples are mutually tangent to at least three neighboring dimples.

7. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the step of determining a dimple pattern is based on circles having two or more substantially different diameters.

8. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the first portion comprises the entire surface of the golf ball including the equator.

9. A method of forming a golf ball having a surface comprising a plurality of dimples comprising the steps of:

defining a first portion of the surface in which the plurality of dimples will be arranged;

determining a dimple pattern for the first portion by arranging a plurality of circles on a Riemann surface, and wherein each circle is not tangent to any other circle in more than one place;

arranging the dimples on the first portion of the surface; and

forming a golf ball cover on the golf ball comprising the dimple pattern.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein substantially all of the dimples are mutually tangent to at least three neighboring dimples.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein at least about 80 percent of the surface is covered with the plurality of dimples.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of circles comprises a predetermined number of different circle diameters.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the dimple pattern comprises a predetermined number of fixed circle positions.

14. The method of claim 9 , further comprising repeating the pattern on other portions of the golf ball.

15. The method of claim 9 , wherein the step of determining a dimple pattern is based on circles having two or more substantially different diameters.

16. A method of forming a golf ball having a surface comprising a plurality of dimples comprising the steps of:

defining a first portion of the surface in which the plurality of dimples will be arranged;

determining a dimple pattern for the first portion based on circle packing theory, wherein the circles have two or more substantially different diameters, wherein at least about 80 percent of the surface is covered with dimples, wherein substantially all of the dimples are mutually tangent to at least three neighboring dimples;

arranging the dimples on the first portion of the surface; and

forming a golf ball cover on the golf ball comprising the dimple pattern.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising repeating the pattern on other portions of the golf ball.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein at least about 82 percent of the surface is covered with the plurality of dimples.
