Abstract

A method and system for providing assistance to a user within a store is disclosed. A communication event between a mobile device of the user and a store item is detected. A database which includes data indicative of a position of the store item within the store is accessed. Based on information from the database, a position of the user within the store is estimated and information, based at least on part of the estimated position, is provided to the user. The information may be provided to the use via the mobile device and may include promotional materials.

Claims (42)

estimating a position of the user within the store based on said position data; and

providing information to the user based at least in part upon the estimated position of the user.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said detecting includes receiving a message transmitted by the mobile device.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the associated event comprises the mobile device scanning a code of the store item.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the associated event comprises the mobile device taking a picture of the store item.

5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the associated event comprises the mobile device detecting a radio frequency identification (RFID) of the store item.

6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the associated event includes a user interaction with an electronic shopping list of the mobile device.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the database comprises a store planogram.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the providing information to the user is conducted via the mobile device.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising, detecting the mobile device entering the store and registering the mobile device.

10 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising determining an identity of the user.

11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein said providing of information includes providing promotional material to the user based at least in part on information regarding previous transactions.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said providing of information includes providing promotional material.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said providing of information includes requesting one or more additional events associated with the mobile device.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the store item is a stock item.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the store item is a wireless transceiver affixed to a position within the store.

16 . A system including processor and storage media accessible to the processor, configured to determine the location of a user within a store, the system being operable for:

detecting an event associated with a store item and a mobile device used by the user;

accessing a database including position data indicative of a position of the store item within the store;

estimating a position of the user within the store based on said position data; and

providing information to the user via the mobile device based at least in part upon the estimated position of the user.

17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein said detecting includes receiving a message transmitted by the mobile device.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the associated event includes a user interaction with an electronic shopping list of the mobile device.

19 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the database comprises a store planogram.

20 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the providing information to the user is conducted via the mobile device.

21 . The system of claim 16 , further comprising, detecting the mobile device entering the store and registering the mobile device.

22 . The system of claim 16 , wherein said providing of information includes providing promotional material to the user.

23 . Computer readable memory media, including computer executable program instructions for determining the location of a user within a store, said program instructions executable to:

detect a communication between a mobile device of the user and a store item;

access a database including position data indicative of a position of the store item within the store;

estimate a position of the user within the store based on said position data; and

provide information to the user based at least in part upon the estimated position of the user.

24 . The memory media of claim 23 , further including program instructions executable to:

detect the user entering the store.

25 . The memory media of claim 24 , further including program instructions executable to:

determine an identity of the user.

26 . The memory media of claim 23 , wherein the information provided to the user includes promotional material.

27 . The memory media of claim 23 , wherein the store item is a stock item.

28 . The memory media of claim 23 , wherein the store item is a wireless transceiver affixed to a position within the store.
