Abstract

An exemplary compressor for a turbocharger includes a compressor wheel that includes first and second compressor faces oriented back-to-back and a bore for mounting the compressor wheel to a shaft along a rotational axis of the compressor wheel; and a compressor housing that includes a first air inlet oriented to pass inlet air in an axial direction along the rotational axis to the first compressor face, a second air inlet positioned a distance radially from the rotational axis and oriented to pass inlet air in an axial direction parallel to the rotational axis and radially toward the rotational axis to the second compressor face, and a single volute that receives compressed air from the first and second compressor faces.

Claims (48)

1. A compressor for a turbocharger comprising:

a compressor wheel that comprises first and second compressor faces oriented back-to-back and a bore for mounting the compressor wheel to a shaft along a rotational axis of the compressor wheel; and

a compressor housing that comprises

a first air inlet oriented to pass inlet air in an axial direction along the rotational axis to the first compressor face,

a second air inlet positioned a distance radially from the rotational axis and oriented to pass inlet air in an axial direction parallel to the rotational axis and radially toward the rotational axis to the second compressor face, and

a single volute that receives compressed air from the first and second compressor faces.

2. The compressor of claim 1 wherein the bore of the compressor wheel comprises a partial bore.

3. The compressor of claim 1 further comprising a backing plate for mounting the compressor housing to a center housing of a turbocharger.

4. The compressor of claim 1 wherein a portion of the compressor housing comprises an annular, plate-like surface for mounting the compressor housing to a center housing of a turbocharger.

5. The compressor of claim 4 wherein the portion that comprises the annular, plate-like surface further comprises an annular, axially contoured surface to direct inlet air to the second compressor face.

6. A turbocharger comprising the compressor of claim 1 .

7. A compressor comprising:

a dual-faced compressor wheel that comprises an outward inducer face and an opposing inward inducer face positioned along an axis of rotation of the wheel to receive inlet air from individual air inlets and the wheel configured to direct air radially from an exducer portion corresponding to the outward inducer face and to direct air radially from an exducer portion corresponding to the inward inducer face;

a backplate;

a inlet part that comprises a cylindrical wall that forms an individual air inlet to receive and direct inlet air to the outward inducer face of the dual-faced compressor wheel; and

a volute part that comprises

a wall that forms a volute of varying cross-sectional area and that comprises

an inward end that forms an inward air opening for the inward inducer face of the dual-faced compressor wheel,

an outward end that forms an opposing outward opening, axially spaced from the inward air opening, to upon assembly, receive the dual-faced compressor wheel and the inlet part,

two substantially parallel, axially spaced portions, one portion intermediate the inward end and the volute and the other portion intermediate the outward end and the volute, wherein the axially spaced portions form at least part of a single passage configured to pass air to the volute from the exducer portion corresponding to the outward inducer face and the exducer portion corresponding to the inward inducer face of the dual-faced compressor wheel,

an outward cylindrical wall portion displaced radially from the axis and stemming from a portion of the wall, adjacent a smaller cross-sectional area of the volute, the outward cylindrical wall portion forming an individual air inlet to receive inlet air for the inward face of the dual-faced compressor wheel, and

an inward cylindrical wall portion configured to adjoin the backplate.

8. The compressor of claim 7 wherein the dual-faced compressor wheel comprises a partial bore along the axis, the bore configured to receive a shaft.

9. The compressor of claim 7 wherein the inlet part comprises an annular wall portion that forms at least part of the single passage.

10. The compressor of claim 7 wherein a portion of the outward cylindrical wall extends from the individual air inlet to the inward cylindrical wall portion.

11. The compressor of claim 7 wherein the wall and the backplate form an inlet air space for the inward inducer face.

12. The compressor of claim 11 wherein the backplate comprises a contour to direct inlet air axially to the inward inducer face.

13. The compressor of claim 11 wherein the backplate comprises features for attachment to a center housing of a turbocharger.

14. The compressor of claim 7 wherein the wall comprises a contour intermediate the inward end and its axially spaced portion wherein the contour follows a contour of the dual-faced compressor wheel.

15. The compressor of claim 7 wherein the inlet part comprises a contour that follows a contour of the dual-faced compressor wheel.

16. The compressor of claim 7 wherein inlet air flows along the axis to the outward face of the dual-faced compressor wheel and wherein inlet air flows parallel to the axis, radially toward the axis and then axially to the inward face of the dual-faced compressor wheel.

17. The compressor of claim 7 wherein the volute part comprises a unitary volute part.

18. The compressor of claim 7 wherein the inlet part comprises a unitary inlet part.

19. The compressor of claim 7 wherein the volute part comprises a unitary volute part and wherein the inlet part comprises a unitary inlet part.

20. A turbocharger comprising:

a turbine;

a center housing; and

a compressor that comprises

a dual-faced compressor wheel that comprises an outward inducer face and an opposing inward inducer face positioned along an axis of rotation of the wheel to receive inlet air from individual air inlets and the wheel configured to direct air radially from an exducer portion corresponding to the outward inducer face and to direct air radially from an exducer portion corresponding to the inward inducer face;

a backplate;

a inlet part that comprises a cylindrical wall that forms an individual air inlet to receive and direct inlet air to the outward inducer face of the dual-faced compressor wheel; and

a volute part that comprises

a wall that forms a volute of varying cross-sectional area and that comprises
