Abstract

A liquid crystal display includes a pair of transparent substrates opposed to each other with liquid crystal therebetween, one of the pair of transparent substrates having a plurality of drain signal lines and a plurality of gate signal lines, and a plurality of pixel areas defined by the drain signal lines and the gate signal lines. The pixel areas includes a pixel electrode formed of a transparent electrode having a plurality of slits including a slit opened in a first direction and a slit opened in a second direction, and a counter electrode formed of a transparent electrode disposed between the transparent electrode of the pixel electrode having the plurality of slits and the one substrate.

Claims (24)

1. A liquid crystal display comprising:

a first substrate and a second substrate opposed to each other with liquid crystal therebetween, the first substrate having a plurality of drain signal lines and a plurality of gate signal lines; and

a plurality of pixel areas defined by the drain signal lines and the gate signal lines, the pixel areas having:

a first electrode formed of a transparent conducting layer having a plurality of slits;

a second electrode formed of a transparent conducting layer without slits; and

an insulating layer interposed between the first electrode and the second electrode;

wherein the second electrode is overlapped with all of the slits of the first electrode in the pixel area, the first electrode is overlapped with the drain signal line, and the first electrode and the second electrode overlap one another proximate to the drain signal line; and

wherein at least one of the first electrode and the second electrode is formed between the first substrate and the liquid crystal layer in the pixel area.

2. The liquid crystal display according to claim 1 , wherein the first electrode is formed between the second electrode and the liquid crystal layer.

3. The liquid crystal display according to claim 2 , wherein

the first electrode is a counter electrode and the second electrode is a pixel electrode; and

the pixel areas each have a thin-film transistor connected to the drain signal line and the gate signal line and have a counter voltage signal line that feeds an electric signal to the counter electrode.

4. The liquid crystal display according to claim 3 , wherein, of the drain signal line, the gate signal line, and the counter voltage signal line, the line in contact with the transparent conducting layer is made of a material containing aluminum, and the surface in contact with the transparent conducting layer has a high-melting metal layer, and the high-melting metal layer is made of any of titanium, chromium, molybdenum, tantalum, and tungsten.

5. The liquid crystal display according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a protecting layer between the layer of the first electrode and the layer of the drain signal lines, wherein

the protecting layer is made of organic film.

6. The liquid crystal display according to claim 5 , wherein the organic film has a dielectric constant of from 3 to 4.

7. The liquid crystal display according to claim 5 , wherein the organic film has a thickness of 1,000 nm to 3,000 nm.

8. The liquid crystal display according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a spacer holding a space, on the gate signal lines, between the first substrate and the second substrate, wherein

the spacer is made of the same material as that of the insulating layer between the first electrode and the second electrode.

9. The liquid crystal display according to claim 1 , wherein the insulating layer on the position superposed on the slits of the first electrode has grooves along the slits of the first electrode.

10. The liquid crystal display according to claim 1 , wherein the first electrode is provided also between the drain signal line and the liquid crystal layer,

the second substrate has no light-shielding layer.
