Abstract

A method and an apparatus for processing a session request in an Internet Protocol (IP) network are disclosed. For example, the method receives a session request, and queries an tElephone NUmbering Mapping (ENUM) server for a called party of the session request. The method determines if at least one Naming Authority Pointer (NAPTR) resource record associated with the called party is received from the ENUM server, and forwards the session request to a circuit switched network if the at least one NAPTR resource record is not received from the ENUM server. The method determines a Session Description Protocol (SDP) value of the session request if the at least one NAPTR resource record is received from the ENUM server, and processes the session request in accordance with the SDP value if the at least one NAPTR resource record is received from the ENUM server.

Claims (36)

1. A method for processing a session request in an internet protocol network, comprising:

receiving the session request;

querying a telephone numbering mapping server for a called party of the session request;

determining if a naming authority pointer resource record associated with the called party is received from the telephone numbering mapping server;

forwarding the session request to a circuit switched network if the naming authority pointer resource record is not received from the telephone numbering mapping server;

determining a session description protocol value of the session request if the naming authority pointer resource record is received from the telephone numbering mapping server, wherein the session description protocol value defines a type of service and is included in the session request; and

processing the session request in accordance with the session description protocol value if the naming authority pointer resource record is received from the telephone numbering mapping server, wherein the processing the session request comprises forwarding the session request towards the called party over the internet protocol network if the session description protocol value of the session request is for a service provided over the internet protocol network.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the session request is an invite message in accordance with a session initiation protocol.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the forwarding the session request to the circuit switched network is performed using a telephone universal resource identifier.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the service provided over the internet protocol network comprises a video share service.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the forwarding the session request towards the called party over the internet protocol network is performed using a session initiation protocol universal resource identifier.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the circuit switched network comprises a public switched telephone network.

7. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored thereon a plurality of instructions, the plurality of instructions including instructions which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform a method for processing a session request in an internet protocol network, comprising:

receiving the session request;

querying a telephone numbering mapping server for a called party of the session request;

determining if a naming authority pointer resource record associated with the called party is received from the telephone numbering mapping server;

forwarding the session request to a circuit switched network if the naming authority pointer resource record is not received from the telephone numbering mapping server;

determining a session description protocol value of the session request if the naming authority pointer resource record is received from the telephone numbering mapping server, wherein the session description protocol value defines a type of service and is included in the session request; and

processing the session request in accordance with the session description protocol value if the naming authority pointer resource record is received from the telephone numbering mapping server, wherein the processing the session request comprises forwarding the session request towards the called party over the internet protocol network if the session description protocol value of the session request is for a service provided over the internet protocol network.

8. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the forwarding the session request to the circuit switched network is performed using a telephone universal resource identifier.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the session request is an invite message in accordance with a session initiation protocol.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the circuit switched network comprises a public switched telephone network.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the service provided over the internet protocol network comprises a video share service.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the forwarding the session request towards the called party over the internet protocol network is performed using a session initiation protocol universal resource identifier.

13. An apparatus for processing a session request in an internet protocol network, comprising:

a processor configured to:

receive the session request;

query a telephone numbering mapping server for a called party of the session request;

determine if a naming authority pointer resource record associated with the called party is received from the telephone numbering mapping server;

forward the session request to a circuit switched network if the naming authority pointer resource record is not received from the telephone numbering mapping server;

determine a session description protocol value of the session request if the naming authority pointer resource record is received from the telephone numbering mapping server, wherein the session description protocol value defines a type of service and is included in the session request; and

process the session request in accordance with the session description protocol value if the naming authority pointer resource record is received from the telephone numbering mapping server, wherein the session request is processed by forwarding the session request towards the called party over the internet protocol network if the session description protocol value of the session request is for a service provided over the internet protocol network.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the processor is configured to forward the session request towards the called party over the internet protocol network by using a session initiation protocol universal resource identifier.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the processor is configured to forward the session request to the circuit switched network by using a telephone universal resource identifier.

16. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the session request is an invite message in accordance with a session initiation protocol.

17. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the service provided over the internet protocol network comprises a video share service.
