Abstract

A system and method are provided for boosting power for a communications link between a base station and a user device, or user equipment, over a communications link channel in a cellular communications network. In one embodiment, the base station determines whether a communications link for a user device located within a sector of a cell served by the base station needs a power boost. If a power boost is needed, the base station provides a power boost for the communications link for the user device and, for each of one or more neighboring sectors that neighbor the sector in which the user device is located, coordinates the power boost in both frequency and time with a power backoff for a downlink to another user device located in a cell center area of the neighboring sector.

1. A method of operating a base station in a cellular communications network to provide a power boost for a communications link between the base station and a user device over a communications link channel, comprising:

determining whether a power boost is needed for a communications link between the base station and the user device, the user device being located within a sector of a cell served by the base station; and

if a power boost is needed for the communications link between the base station and the user device, providing a power boost for the communications link between the base station and the user device that is coordinated in both frequency and in time with a power backoff for a second user device located in a cell center area of a neighboring sector of the sector in which the user device is located.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein providing the power boost for the communications link comprises providing the power boost for the communications link such that the power boost is coordinated in both frequency and in time with, for each one of a plurality of neighboring sectors of the sector in which the user device is located including the neighboring sector, a power backoff for a second user device located in a cell center area of the one of the plurality of neighboring sectors.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the plurality of neighboring sectors comprise one of a group consisting of: all neighboring sectors outside of the cell served by the base station and a subset of all neighboring sectors outside of the cell served by the base station.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the plurality of neighboring sectors further comprise one of a group consisting of: all neighboring sectors inside of the cell served by the base station and a subset of all neighboring sectors inside of the cell served by the base station.

5. The method of claim 2 wherein the communications link channel has a full channel bandwidth including a plurality of sub-carrier frequencies, and providing the power boost for the communications link comprises:

identifying a subset of the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies of the communications link channel as a reduced bandwidth channel for the communications link to the user device based on information regarding power boosts and power backoffs in the plurality of neighboring sectors such that the reduced bandwidth channel has a reduced bandwidth that is less than the full channel bandwidth of the communications link channel and corresponds to a desired power boost; and

scheduling the communications link to the user device using the reduced bandwidth channel such that signal power is concentrated on the subset of the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies in the reduced bandwidth channel rather than distributed across the full channel bandwidth, thereby providing the power boost for the communications link.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the information regarding power boosts and power backoffs in the plurality of neighboring sectors comprises information identifying sub-carrier frequencies from the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies of the communications link channel used for power boosts in the plurality of neighboring sectors and information identifying sub-carrier frequencies from the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies in the communications link channel used for power backoffs in the plurality of neighboring sectors.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the subset of the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies of the communications link channel comprises sub-carrier frequencies from the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies of the communications link channel that are being used for a power backoff in each of the plurality of neighboring sectors and are not being used for a power boost in any of the plurality of the neighboring sectors.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein if for one or more neighboring sectors of the plurality of neighboring sectors there are no sub-carrier frequencies used for a power backoff, the subset of the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies of the communications link channel comprises sub-carrier frequencies from the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies of the communications link channel that are not being used for a power boost in the one or more neighboring sectors.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein if for one or more neighboring sectors of the plurality of neighboring sectors there are no sub-carrier frequencies used for a power backoff that are not already being used for a power boost in another neighboring sector of the plurality of neighboring sectors, the subset of the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies of the communications link channel comprises sub-carrier frequencies from the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies of the communications link channel that are not being used for a power boost in the one or more neighboring sectors.

10. The method of claim 5 wherein scheduling the communications link to the user device using the reduced bandwidth channel comprises allocating one or more sub-carrier frequencies from the subset of the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies in the reduced bandwidth channel for the communications link to the user device during a transmit time interval when only the reduced bandwidth channel is utilized.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising:

determining an amount of out-of-cell interference for each of the subset of the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies for the user device;

wherein allocating the one or more sub-carrier frequencies from the subset of the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies in the reduced bandwidth channel for the communications link to the user device comprises allocating one or more sub-carrier frequencies from the subset of the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies in the reduced bandwidth channel having a least amount of out-of-cell interference for the communications link to the user device.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein determining whether a power boost is needed for the communications link comprises:

obtaining a Signal-to-Interference-Plus-Noise (SINR) for the communications link; and

determining that a power boost is needed if the SINR is less than a predetermined threshold.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the predetermined threshold is a minimum SINR needed to maintain a communications link with the base station.

14. The method of claim 12 further comprising:

determining that a power backoff is needed if the SINR is greater than a predetermined maximum threshold; and

if a power backoff is needed:

determining a desired power backoff; and

providing the communications link to the user device using the communications link channel having a full channel bandwidth at the desired power backoff.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein providing the communications link to the user device using the communications link channel having the full channel bandwidth at the desired power backoff comprises allocating one or more sub-carrier frequencies from a plurality of sub-carrier frequencies in the full channel bandwidth of the communications link channel for the communications link to the user device during a transmit time interval in which the full channel bandwidth of the communications link channel at the desired power backoff is utilized.

16. The method of claim 1 further comprising providing the communications link to the user device using the communications link channel having a full channel bandwidth at a full transmit power if neither a power boost nor a power backoff is needed for the communications link to the user device.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein providing the communications link to the user device using the communications link channel having the full channel bandwidth at the full transmit power comprises allocating one or more sub-carrier frequencies from a plurality of sub-carrier frequencies in the full channel bandwidth of the communications link channel for the communications link to the user device during a transmit time interval in which the full channel bandwidth of the communications link channel at the full transmit power is utilized.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein the communications link channel is a downlink channel and the communications link is a downlink.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein the downlink channel is an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) channel.
