Abstract

The present invention provides substituted 8-[6-amino-3-pyridyl]xanthines like the compound shown in the following formula: and pharmaceutical compositions that are selective antagonists of A 2B adenosine receptors (ARs). These compounds and compositions are useful as pharmaceutical agents.

Claims (42)

1. A compound selected from the group:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

2. A pharmaceutical composition comprising:

(a) a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of claim 1 ; and

(b) a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient.

3. A method for treating asthma comprising administering an effective amount of a compound claim 1 to a mammal in need of such treatment.

4. A method for treating diarrhea, insulin resistance, and diabetic retinopathy, comprising administering an effective amount of a compound claim 1 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof to a mammal in need of such treatment.

5. A compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

6. A pharmaceutical composition comprising:

(a) a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of claim 5 ; and

(b) a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient.

7. A compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

8. A pharmaceutical composition comprising:

(a) a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of claim 7 ; and

(b) a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient.

9. A compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

10. A pharmaceutical composition comprising:

(a) a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of claim 9 ; and

(b) a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient.

11. A compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

12. A pharmaceutical composition comprising:

(a) a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of claim 11 ; and

(b) a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient.

13. A compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

14. A pharmaceutical composition comprising:

(a) a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of claim 13 ; and

(b) a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient.

15. A method for treating asthma, comprising administering an effective amount of a compound claim 5 to a mammal in need of such treatment.

16. A method for treating diarrhea, insulin resistance, and diabetic retinopathy, comprising administering an effective amount of a compound claim 5 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof to a mammal in need of such treatment.

17. A method for treating asthma, comprising administering an effective amount of a compound claim 7 to a mammal in need of such treatment.

18. A method for treating diarrhea, insulin resistance, and diabetic retinopathy, comprising administering an effective amount of a compound claim 7 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof to a mammal in need of such treatment.

19. A method for treating asthma, comprising administering an effective amount of a compound claim 9 to a mammal in need of such treatment.

20. A method for treating diarrhea, insulin resistance, and diabetic retinopathy, comprising administering an effective amount of a compound claim 9 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof to a mammal in need of such treatment.

21. A method for treating asthma, comprising administering an effective amount of a compound claim 11 to a mammal in need of such treatment.

22. A method for treating diarrhea, insulin resistance, and diabetic retinopathy, comprising administering an effective amount of a compound claim 11 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof to a mammal in need of such treatment.

23. A method for treating asthma, comprising administering an effective amount of a compound claim 13 to a mammal in need of such treatment.

24. A method for treating diarrhea, insulin resistance, and diabetic retinopathy, comprising administering an effective amount of a compound claim 13 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof to a mammal in need of such treatment.
