Abstract

An aqueous-based UV-curable fluid composition for use in a micro-fluid ejection device. The fluid composition includes a mixture of poly-functional compounds, a colorant compound, a photo-initiator and less than about 50 weight percent water based on a total weight of the fluid composition, wherein the fluid composition is substantially devoid of volatile organic carrier fluids.

Claims (14)

1. A scanning thermal micro-fluid ejection device for ejecting a UV-curable fluid onto a substrate, comprising one or more micro-fluid ejection heads, a structure for scanning the ejection heads across a substrate, a source of actinic radiation, and a shielding device to shield the one or more ejection heads from the source of actinic radiation wherein the one or more ejection heads further include nozzle plates having a UV opaque layer thereon and the UV opaque layer is a ceramic material.

2. The ejection device of claim 1 , further comprising a light shield for shielding the one or more ejection heads from ambient light.

3. The ejection device of claim 1 , having a fire pulse that provides nucleation of the fluid within about 600 to about 1000 microseconds.

4. The ejection device of claim 1 having ejection actuators having a power per unit volume of about 2 to about 3 Peta-Watts per cubic meter.

5. The ejection device of claim 1 having ejection actuators having an energy per unit volume of about 2.5 to about 4.0 Giga-Joules per cubic meter.

6. The ejection device of claim 1 wherein the one or more ejection heads provide individual droplet volumes of about 16.5 picoliters each.

7. The ejection device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more ejection heads have a refill rates that are consistent with 6 KHz operation.

8. The ejection device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more ejection heads provide droplets having a nearly zero meniscus bulge and substantially no nozzle plate flooding.

9. The ejection device of claim 1 having an ejector pumping effectiveness of about 5 pL per micro-joule.

10. The ejection device of claim 1 , having about 5 times greater pumping effectiveness than an ejection head for ejecting a UV-curable fluid containing volatile solvents such as ethanol, methanol and 1-propanol.

11. The ejection device of claim 1 having a jet velocity ranging from about 8 to about 10 meters per second.

12. The ejection device of claim 1 , wherein the UV opaque layer comprises TiO 2 having a thickness ranging from about 1.5 to about 2.5 microns thick.

13. The ejection device of claim 1 , wherein the UV opaque layer comprises a material selected from the group consisting of TiO 2 , CeO 2 , TiO 2 —CeO 2 , and ZnO.

14. The ejection device of claim 1 , wherein the nozzle plates comprise photo-imageable nozzle plates.
