Abstract

Techniques for providing a method and system for trunk independent gateway transfer of calls are disclosed. In one particular exemplary embodiment, the techniques may be realized as a computer implemented method, comprising receiving a call transfer request for a call at a gateway and determining, using a processor of the gateway, whether a trunk to be used for transferring the call requires a transfer command. In the event the trunk requires transfer command, the techniques comprise generating a transfer command, and transferring the call using the transfer command.

Claims (40)

1. A computer implemented method, comprising:

receiving a call transfer request for a call at a gateway;

determining, using a processor of the gateway, whether a trunk to be used for transferring the call requires a transfer command;

in the event the trunk requires a transfer command;

generating a transfer command; and

transferring the call using the transfer command.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the call transfer request is received from an Internet Protocol (IP) based network and transferred onto a switched network.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the transfer command further comprises using code associated with the trunk to be used for the transfer to generate the transfer code.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the call transfer request initiates from one or more network elements comprising at least one of: an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system, an automatic call distributor (ACD) system, a Voice Portal, and a telecommunications interaction and management system.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating a transfer command comprises generation of in-band signaling tones.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the generation of in-band signaling tones comprises at least one of: downloading one or more Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) tones associated with a destination number, generating one or more Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) tones associated with a destination number; receiving one or more DTMF tones associated with a destination number, and concatenating multiple DTMF tones into a single audio file.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising identifying a trunk to be used for routing the call from a plurality of trunks associated with the gateway.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein call transfer information is generated for a control channel associated with the trunk to be used for routing the call.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the call transfer request comprises a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) refer message.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transfer command is generated using information contained in the call transfer request.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising transferring the call from an IP based network to an originating Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in response to receiving the transfer command.

12. A non-transitory computer readable media containing computer executable code comprising code to perform the acts of the method of claim 1 .

13. A system, comprising:

a gateway communicatively coupled to a plurality of networks;

one or more trunks communicatively coupled to the gateway;

a processor communicatively coupled to the gateway, wherein the processor is configured to execute code associated with at least one of the one or more trunks and the code is configured to cause the gateway to:

receive a call transfer request for a call;

determine whether a trunk to be used for transferring the call requires a transfer command;

in the event the trunk requires a transfer command;

generate a transfer command; and

transfer the call using the transfer command.

14. A system, comprising:

a network element communicatively coupled to a first network and a second network;

a processor communicatively coupled to the network element, wherein the processor is configured to:

receive a call transfer request for a call;

determine whether a trunk to be used for transferring the call requires a transfer command;

in the event the trunk requires a transfer command;

generate a transfer command; and

transfer the call using the transfer command.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein determining whether a trunk to be used for transferring the call requires a transfer command enables a system to request a call transfer using a single format to transfer across a plurality of trunk types.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the processor generates a transfer command which comprises in-band signaling tones.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the processor generation of in-band signaling tones comprises at least one of downloading one or more Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) tones associated with a destination number, generating one or more Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) tones associated with a destination number; receiving one or more DTMF tones associated with a destination number, and concatenating multiple DTMF tones into a single audio file.

18. The system of claim 14 , wherein the processor receives a call transfer request comprising a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) refer message.

19. The system of claim 14 , wherein the processor generates a transfer command using information contained in the call transfer request.

20. The system of claim 14 , wherein the processor generates a transfer command using at least one of default transfer information, dialed number identification service information associated with the call, and a call mapping data structure.
