Abstract

An embodiment of a hearing assistance device comprises a housing, a power source, a radio circuit, an antenna and a transmission line. The radio circuit is within the housing and electrically connected to the power source. The antenna has an aperture, and the radio circuit is at least substantially within the aperture. The transmission line electrically connects to the antenna to the radio circuit. Various antenna embodiments include a flex circuit antenna.

Claims (33)

1. A hearing assistance device, comprising:

a housing, wherein the housing has a long axis;

a power source;

a radio circuit within the housing and electrically connected to the power source, wherein the radio circuit includes a transmitter/receiver, a processor and storage;

an antenna having an aperture with at least one loop, the antenna configured to provide a three-dimensional aperture within the loop, wherein the radio circuit is at least substantially within the aperture; and

a transmission line to electrically connect the antenna to the radio circuit,

wherein the antenna is a flex circuit antenna and, as assembled, the flex circuit antenna forms a loop in a plane substantially perpendicular to the long axis of the housing, and the aperture has an axis substantially parallel to the long axis, and the flex circuit antenna includes a first portion, a second portion and a third portion, the first and second portions form a first aperture, the first and third portions form a second aperture, and the second and third portions are electrically connected in parallel

wherein the housing includes an outer shell with an inside surface and an outside surface, and at least a portion of the antenna conforms to a portion of the inside surface of the outer shell.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the antenna includes multi-filar wire.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the antenna includes metal plating.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the antenna includes a metal shim.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the power source is not within the aperture of the flex circuit antenna.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the housing includes an outer shell with an inside surface and an outside surface, and the flex circuit antenna conforms to a portion of the inside surface of the outer shell.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the housing includes an outer shell with an inside surface and an outside surface, and at least a portion of the flex circuit antenna is on a portion of the inside surface of the outer shell.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the housing has a groove around the radio circuit, and the groove adapted to receive at least a portion of the flex circuit antenna when the flex circuit antenna loops around the radio circuit.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the power source is excluded from either the first or second apertures.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second apertures have nonparallel center axes.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the radio circuit includes a hybrid radio circuit.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein the hybrid radio circuit includes a radio, an EPROM and a digital signal processor.

13. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a microphone, a receiver, and signal processing circuitry connected to the antenna, the microphone and the receiver.

14. The device of claim 13 , wherein the microphone and the receiver are not within the aperture of the flex circuit antenna.

15. The device of claim 1 , wherein the flex circuit antenna includes a conductor layer between dielectric layers.

16. The device of claim 15 , wherein the dielectric layers includes a polyimide material.

17. The device of claim 15 , wherein the conductor layer includes copper.

18. A method of forming a hearing assistance device, comprising:

placing a radio circuit within a housing of the device, wherein the housing has a long axis and wherein the radio circuit includes a transmitter/receiver, a processor and storage; and

looping a flex circuit antenna to form a three-dimensional aperture and electrically connecting the antenna to the radio circuit, wherein the radio circuit is at least substantially within the aperture,

wherein, as assembled, the flex circuit antenna forms a loop in a plane substantially perpendicular to the long axis of the housing, and the aperture has an axis substantially parallel to the long axis, and wherein the flex circuit antenna includes a first portion, a second portion and a third portion, the first and second portions form a first aperture, the first and third portions form a second aperture, and the second and third portions are electrically connected in parallel, and wherein the housing includes an outer shell with an inside surface and an outside surface, and at least a portion of the coil antenna conforms to a portion of the inside surface of the outer shell.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the housing of the device includes a groove, wherein looping the coil antenna includes placing the coil antenna in the groove.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the housing has a long axis, and looping the coil antenna includes forming a loop in a plane parallel to the long axis of the housing.

21. The method of claim 18 , wherein the housing has a long axis, and looping the coil antenna includes forming a loop in a plane perpendicular to the long axis of the housing.

22. The method of claim 18 , wherein looping the coil antenna around the radio circuit when the radio circuit is within the housing includes wrapping the coil antenna around the housing to loop around the radio circuit when the radio circuit is within the housing.

23. The method of claim 18 , further comprising electrically connecting the radio circuit to a power source in the housing, to a microphone in the housing and to a receiver in the housing, wherein the power source, the microphone and the receiver are not within the aperture.
