Abstract

A system and method are disclosed that allows for uplink resource reuse. A user device is provided an uplink resource for a first data type. If the user device does not have enough data of the first data type to fill the granted uplink resource, the user device fills the granted uplink resource with a second data type.

Claims (34)

1. A method for uplink resource reuse by a user equipment (UE), the method comprising:

receiving, by the UE, a semi-persistent uplink resource allocation for a first data type session, the semi-persistent uplink resource allocation comprising a plurality of individual uplink resource allocations space in time and the first data type session being a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) session;

determining, by the UE, that an amount of data to be sent for the VoIP session is less than an individual uplink resource allocation;

after determining, assigning, by the UE, an unused portion of the individual uplink resource allocation for the VoIP session to send data for a second data type session of the UE during a transient period in which the amount of data to be sent for the VoIP session is less than a maximum and greater than zero; and

using, by the UE, a portion of the individual uplink resource allocation to send the amount of data for the VoIP session and using the unused portion of the individual uplink resource allocation to send data for the second data type session.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second data type session comprises a non-VoIP session.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein assigning the unused portion of the individual uplink resource allocation to a second data type session further comprises assigning the unused portion of the individual uplink resource allocation to one of the following services:

email; and

HTTP.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transient period occurs between a talking period and a silence period.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein a modulation and coding scheme is used for the VoIP session and the second data type session, and wherein the modulation and coding scheme is the same for the VoIP session and the second data type session.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the semi-persistent uplink resource allocation is not released by the UE during the transient period.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second data type session is a non-VoIP session.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the individual uplink resource allocation used for the VoIP session is equal to the individual uplink resource allocation minus the unused portion assigned to the second data type session.

9. A user device (UE) comprising:

a processor configured to receive a semi-persistent uplink resource allocation for a first data type session, the semi-persistent resource allocation comprising a plurality of individual uplink resource allocations spaced in time and the first data type session being a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) session;

the processor further configured to determine that an amount of data to be sent for the VoIP session is less than an individual uplink resource allocation;

the processor further configured to assign, after the determination, during a transient period in which the amount of data to be sent for the VoIP session is less than a maximum and greater than zero, an unused portion of the individual uplink resource allocation for the VoIP session to send data for a second data type session of the UE; and

the processor further configured to use a portion of the individual uplink resource allocation to send the amount of data for the VoIP session and use the unused portion of the individual uplink resource allocation to send data for the second data type session.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the second data type session comprises a non-VoIP session.

11. The device of claim 9 , wherein the processor is configured to assign the unused portion of the individual uplink resource allocation to one of the following services:

email; and

HTTP.

12. The device of claim 9 , wherein the transient period occurs between a talking period and a silence period.

13. The device of claim 9 , wherein a modulation and coding scheme is used for the VoIP session and the second data type session, and wherein the modulation and coding scheme is the same for the VoIP session and the second data type session.

14. The device of claim 9 , wherein the semi-persistent uplink resource allocation is not released by the UE during the transient period.

15. A user equipment (UE) configured to:

receive, at the UE, a semi-persistent uplink resource allocation for a first data type, the semi-persistent resource allocation comprising a plurality of individual uplink resource allocations spaced in time and the first data type being a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) session;

determine, by the UE, that a portion of an individual uplink resource allocation will not be used by the VoIP session during a transient period in which an amount of data to be sent for the VoIP session is greater than zero but less than the individual uplink resource allocation;

reassign, by the UE, the portion of the individual uplink resource allocation that will not be used for the VoIP session to transmit data for a second data type; and

transmit, by the UE, the amount of data for the VoIP session using another portion of the individual uplink resource allocation and transmit data for the second data type using the portion of the individual uplink resource allocation reassigned to the second data type.

16. The user equipment of claim 15 , wherein the VoIP session and the second data type are transmitted using the same modulation and coding scheme.

17. The user equipment of claim 15 , wherein the semi-persistent uplink resource allocation is not released by the user equipment prior to transmitting the second data type.

18. The user equipment of claim 15 , wherein the second data type session comprises a non-VoIP session.
