Abstract

Methods and systems for the efficient and non-redundant transmission of a single video program in multiple frame rates, optionally employing a combination of video coding standards, in a way that is backwards-compatible with legacy receivers only supportive of some subsection of frame rates or of some subsection of video coding standards.

Claims (32)

1 . A method, comprising:

receiving, by a first receiver during a first era, a first program, the first program corresponding to a first multiplexed plurality of streams (FMPOS), the FMPOS including:

a first video stream coded according to a first video specification and having a first stream type value;

a second video stream; and

receiving, by a second receiver during a second era, a second program, the second program corresponding to a second multiplexed plurality of streams (SMPOS), the SMPOS including:

a third video stream coded according to a second video specification and having a second stream type value different than the first stream type value; and

a fourth video stream that is complementary to the third video stream.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second video stream is coded according to the second video specification different than the first video specification.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the second video specification corresponds to a compression performance superior to the first video specification.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the second video stream is complementary to the first video stream.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising decoding at least one of the first video stream and the second video stream, the decoding of the first video stream independent of the decoding of the second video stream.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising decoding at least one of the third video stream and the fourth video stream, the decoding of the fourth video stream independent of the decoding of the third video stream.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving association information for the second program, the association information providing a plurality of stream associations, wherein each respective stream association consists of a stream type and a respectively corresponding identifier for packets of the streams in the MPOS, wherein the stream type values of the third video stream and the fourth video stream are equal.

8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising identifying one or more of the third video stream and the fourth video stream based on the order of the association information.

9 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising identifying one or more of the third video stream and the fourth video stream based on a relative value of the identifiers.

10 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising identifying one or more of the third video stream and the fourth video stream based on the values of the identifiers.

11 . A system, comprising:

a first receiver configured to receive during a first era a first program, the first program corresponding to a first multiplexed plurality of streams (FMPOS), the FMPOS including:

a first video stream coded according to a first video specification and having a first stream type value;

a second video stream; and

a second receiver configured to receive during a second era a second program, the second program corresponding to a second multiplexed plurality of streams (SMPOS), the SMPOS including:

a third video stream coded according to a second video specification and having a second stream type value different than the first stream type value; and

a fourth video stream that is complementary to the third video stream.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the second video stream is coded according to the second video specification different than the first video specification.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the second video specification corresponds to a compression performance superior to the first video specification.

14 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the second video stream is complementary to the first video stream.

15 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the first receiver is further configured to decode at least one of the first video stream and the second video stream, the decoding of the first video stream independent of the decoding of the second video stream.

16 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the second receiver is further configured to decode at least one of the third video stream and the fourth video stream, the decoding of the fourth video stream independent of the decoding of the third video stream.

17 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the second receiver is further configured to receive association information for the second program, the association information providing a plurality of stream associations, wherein each respective stream association consists of a stream type and a respectively corresponding identifier for packets of the streams in the MPOS, wherein the stream type values of the third video stream and the fourth video stream are equal.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the second receiver is further configured to identify one or more of the third video stream and the fourth video stream based on the order of the association information.

19 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the second receiver is further configured to identify one or more of the third video stream and the fourth video stream based on a relative value of the identifiers.

20 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the second receiver is further configured to identify one or more of the third video stream and the fourth video stream based on the values of the identifiers.
