Abstract

A data storage device including: a plastic substrate having a plurality of volumes arranged in tracks along a plurality of vertically stacked, laterally extending layers therein; and, a plurality of micro-holograms each contained in a corresponding one of the volumes; herein, the presence or absence of a micro-hologram in each of the volumes is indicative of a corresponding portion of data stored.

Claims (34)

1. A data storage device comprising:

a plastic substrate having a plurality of volumes arranged along tracks in a plurality of vertically stacked, laterally extending layers, wherein at least some of said volumes in a common one of the layers are vertically offset with respect to at least others of said volumes in the common one of the layers; and

a plurality of micro-holograms each contained in a corresponding one of said volumes, wherein a first micro-hologram and a second micro-hologram each in adjacent tracks in a common layer are vertically offset such that a detector signal goes substantially to zero between the first micro-hologram and the second micro-hologram;

wherein, the presence or absence of a micro-hologram in each of said volumes is indicative of a corresponding portion of data stored.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein at least some of the volumes in a given one of the tracks are vertically offset with respect to others of the volumes in the given one of the tracks.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein each layer comprises a plurality of tracks, and ones of the volumes in at least one of the tracks in a common layer is vertically offset with respect to ones of the volumes in at least one other of the tracks in the common layer.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein each micro-hologram comprises a plurality of regions having alternating refractive indices, wherein adjacent regions having a same refractive index have a spacing of λ/2, wherein λ is a central wavelength of a beam used to form the regions having alternating refractive indices.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the vertical offset is λ/4.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein said substrate is an about 120 mm diameter disc.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises a thermoplastic.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the thermoplastic has a non-linear functional characteristic.

9. The device of claim 8 , wherein the non-linear functional characteristic is a threshold functional characteristic.

10. The device of claim 7 , wherein the substrate further comprises a thermal catalyst.

11. The device of claim 10 , wherein said dye is a reverse saturable absorber dye.

12. The device of claim 1 , wherein said substrate comprises a dye.

13. The device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said micro-holograms stores more than one bit of data.

14. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a second plurality of micro-holograms in said substrate and indicative of tracking information.

15. The device of claim 14 , wherein each of said data indicative and second plurality of micro-holograms has an axis, and the axis of said data indicative micro-holograms is distinct from the axis of said second plurality of micro-holograms.

16. A method for storing data comprising:

providing a plastic substrate having a plurality of volumes arranged along even tracks and odd tracks in a plurality of stacked and extending layers;

providing a plurality of light beams;

selecting at least some of the volumes as target volumes; and, for each of the target volumes:

phase modulating at least one of the light beams depending on the relative position of the selected target volumes; and,

interfering the phase modulated and at least one other of the light beams within the selected target volumes, thereby forming a plurality of micro-holograms in the substrate;

wherein, each of said micro-holograms is substantially contained in a corresponding one of said volumes and the presence or absence of a micro-hologram in each of said volumes is indicative of a corresponding portion of the data, and wherein the at least one of the light beams are phase modulated such that light beams interfering at selected target volumes in the even tracks in a common data layer form micro-holograms that are vertically offset relative to micro-holograms formed in the odd tracks in the common data layer such that a detector signal goes substantially to zero between reflecting from a micro-hologram in an even track in the common data layer and reflecting from a micro-hologram in an odd track in the common data layer.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein said micro-holograms are selectively formed dependently upon the data.

18. The method of claim 16 , further comprising selectively erasing micro-holograms dependently upon the data.

19. The method of claim 16 , further comprising focusing one of said light beams.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein one of said beams is divergent.

21. The method of claim 19 , further comprising selectively obscuring at least one of the light beams dependently upon the data.

22. The method of claim 16 , further comprising forming a second plurality of holograms having a reflection direction distinct from that of said plurality of holograms.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein said second plurality of holograms define said tracks.

24. The method of claim 16 , further comprising forming a second plurality of micro-holograms, wherein at least one of said second plurality of micro-holograms is co-located in a common one of the volumes with at least one of the plurality of micro-holograms.

25. The method of claim 16 , wherein at least one of said micro-holograms stores more than one bit of data.
