Abstract

An energy storage pack cooling system including upper and lower respective terminal heat sinks thermally connected to respective upper and lower terminals of energy storage cells above and below upper and lower ends of an enclosure of an energy storage cell pack; and a blower and cooling assembly that circulates a heat transfer fluid past the upper and lower respective terminal heat sinks outside of the enclosure to cool the energy storage cells without circulating the heat transfer fluid past energy storage cell bodies of the energy storage cells enclosed within the enclosure.

Claims (22)

1. In an energy storage cell pack including multiple rows of vertically oriented energy storage cells that radiate heat in a longitudinal axial direction upwards and downwards towards opposite respective upper and lower electrically conductive and heat conductive terminals, the energy storage cells further including an energy storage cell body, the energy storage cell pack including an enclosure with upper and lower ends that encloses the energy storage cell bodies of the energy storage cells while exposing the upper and lower terminals out of the respective upper and lower ends of the enclosure, an energy storage pack cooling system comprising:

upper and lower respective terminal heat sinks thermally connected to the respective upper and lower terminals above and below the upper and lower ends of the enclosure;

a blower and cooling assembly that circulates a heat transfer fluid past the upper and lower respective terminal heat sinks outside of the enclosure to cool the energy storage cells without circulating the heat transfer fluid past the energy storage cell bodies of the energy storage cells enclosed within the enclosure.

2. The energy storage pack cooling system of claim 1 , wherein the heat transfer fluid is air.

3. The energy storage pack cooling system of claim 1 , wherein the enclosure includes a first external end and an opposite second external end, and the blower and cooling assembly is disposed adjacent to the first external end, and actively cools the energy storage cells by recirculating a heat transfer fluid past the upper terminal heat sinks outside of the enclosure, around the second end of the enclosure, past the lower terminal heat sinks outside of the enclosure, and back to the blower and cooling assembly.

4. The energy storage pack cooling system of claim 1 , wherein the multiple rows of vertically oriented energy storage cells include a width, and the blower and cooler assembly includes a cross flow fan and a heat exchanger having a width substantially equal to the width of the multiple rows of vertically oriented energy storage cells.

5. The energy storage pack cooling system of claim 4 , further including a central water chiller connected to the heat exchanger.

6. The energy storage pack cooling system of claim 1 , wherein the energy storage pack cooling system includes a coolant flow path formed where heat transfer fluid flows past the upper terminal heat sinks outside of the enclosure and a return flow path formed where heat transfer fluid flows past the lower terminal heat sinks outside of the enclosure, and the temperature of the heat transfer fluid in the coolant flow path is lower than the temperature of the return flow path while the amount of net heat transfer from all of the energy storage cell bodies is substantially the same, regardless of the row that the energy storage cell body resides in.

7. The energy storage pack cooling system of claim 1 , further including multiple temperature sensors associated with the energy storage cells, and a controller to actively control cooling of the energy storage cells using the temperature sensors.

8. The energy storage pack cooling system of claim 1 , wherein a single a blower and cooling assembly is used to cool multiple energy storage cell packs.

9. In an energy storage cell pack including multiple rows of vertically oriented energy storage cells that radiate heat in a longitudinal axial direction upwards and downwards towards opposite respective upper and lower electrically conductive and heat conductive terminals, the energy storage cells further including an energy storage cell body, the energy storage cell pack including an enclosure with upper and lower ends that encloses the energy storage cell bodies of the energy storage cells while exposing the upper and lower terminals out of the respective upper and lower ends of the enclosure, a method of cooling the energy storage cells, comprising:

providing upper and lower respective terminal heat sinks thermally connected to the respective upper and lower terminals above and below the upper and lower ends of the enclosure;

receiving heat in the upper and lower respective terminal heat sinks radiating in a longitudinal axial direction upwards and downwards to and from the opposite respective upper and lower electrically conductive and heat conductive terminals,

circulating a heat transfer fluid past and convectively cooling the upper and lower respective terminal heat sinks outside of the enclosure to remove heat from the energy storage cells without circulating the heat transfer fluid over the energy storage cell bodies of the energy storage cells enclosed within the enclosure.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the heat transfer fluid is air.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the enclosure includes a first external end and an opposite second external end, and the blower and cooling assembly is disposed adjacent to the first external end, and actively cools the energy storage cells by recirculating a heat transfer fluid past the upper terminal heat sinks outside of the enclosure, around the second end of the enclosure, past the lower terminal heat sinks outside of the enclosure, and back to the blower and cooling assembly.

12. The method of claim 9 , wherein the multiple rows of vertically oriented energy storage cells include a width, and the blower and cooler assembly includes a cross flow fan and a heat exchanger having a width substantially equal to the width of the multiple rows of vertically oriented energy storage cells.

13. The method of claim 12 , further including providing a central water chiller connected to the heat exchanger.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein a coolant flow path is formed where heat transfer fluid flows past the upper terminal heat sinks outside of the enclosure and a return flow path is formed where heat transfer fluid flows past the lower terminal heat sinks outside of the enclosure, and the temperate of the heat transfer fluid in the coolant flow path is lower than the temperature of the return flow path while the amount of net heat transfer from all of the energy storage cell bodies is substantially the same, regardless of the row that the energy storage cell body resides in.

15. The method of claim 9 , further including providing multiple temperature sensors associated with the energy storage cells, and a controller to actively control cooling of the energy storage cells using the temperature sensors.

16. The method of claim 9 , wherein a single a blower and cooling assembly is used to cool multiple energy storage cell packs.
