Abstract

The present invention relates to apparatus and methods for treatment of male incontinence and a method for female cystocele repair in which a sling material is positioned between the descending rami of the pubic bone. In such an operation a “hammock-like” sling material is positioned below the urethra in males, or below the posterior bladder wall in the case of cystocele in females.

Claims (26)

1. A surgical procedure for treating a patient, comprising the steps of:

making at least one incision; providing a sling having at least one soft tissue anchor; and

using a tissue anchor inserter to place the at least one soft tissue anchor initially through the at least one incision and then into a patient's soft tissue;

wherein the step of placing the at least one soft tissue anchor into a patient's soft tissue comprises placing the at least one soft tissue anchor into the patient's sacrospinous ligament,

associating the at least one soft tissue anchor with a needle of the soft tissue anchor inserter and activating a release on the soft tissue anchor inserter to deploy the at least one soft tissue anchor from the needle and into the patient's soft tissue, and

further comprising the step of providing a plunger capable of axial movement within the needle of the soft tissue anchor inserter wherein activating the release axially moves the plunger which deploys the at least one soft tissue anchor from the needle.

2. A surgical procedure according to claim 1 wherein the step of providing a plunger capable of axial movement within the needle of the soft tissue anchor inserter to deploy the at least one soft tissue anchor from the needle comprises moving the plunger axially toward the soft tissue anchor to deploy it from the needle.

3. A surgical procedure according to claim 1 wherein the step of associating the at least one soft tissue anchor with the needle further comprising the step of disposing the at least one soft tissue anchor to an anchor guide on the end of the needle prior to deployment.

4. A surgical procedure according to claim 1 further comprising the step of providing a safety on the tissue anchor inserter to prevent release of the at least one soft tissue anchor from the tissue anchor inserter until desired.

5. A surgical procedure according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises treating urinary incontinence.

6. A surgical procedure according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises treating cystocele in a female patient.

7. A surgical procedure according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises supporting vaginal tissue.

8. A surgical procedure according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises treating vaginal vault prolapse.

9. A surgical procedure for treating a patient, comprising the steps of:

making at least one incision; providing a sling having at least one soft tissue anchor; and

using a tissue anchor inserter to place the at least one soft tissue anchor initially through the at least insertion and then into a patient's soft tissue;

wherein the step of placing the at least one soft tissue anchor into a patient's soft tissue comprises placing the at least one soft tissue anchor into the patient's first sacrospinous ligament and implanting another soft tissue anchor into the patient's second sacrospinous ligament with the sling extending between the first and second soft tissue anchors to support an organ or tissue.

10. A surgical procedure according to claim 9 , wherein the step of using a soft tissue anchor inserter further comprises the step of associating the at least one soft tissue anchor with a needle of the soft tissue anchor inserter and activating a release on the soft tissue anchor inserter to deploy the at least one soft tissue anchor from the needle and into the patient's soft tissue.

11. A surgical procedure according to claim 10 further comprising the step of providing a plunger capable of axial movement within the needle of the soft tissue anchor inserter wherein activating the release axially moves the plunger which deploys the at least one soft tissue anchor from the needle.

12. A surgical procedure according to claim 11 wherein the step of providing a plunger capable of axial movement within the needle of the soft tissue anchor inserter to deploy the at least one soft tissue anchor from the needle comprises moving the plunger axially toward the soft tissue anchor to deploy the soft tissue anchor from the needle.

13. A surgical procedure according to claim 10 wherein the step of associating the at least one soft tissue anchor with the needle further comprising the step of disposing the at least one soft tissue anchor to an anchor guide on the end of the needle prior to deployment.

14. A surgical procedure according to claim 10 further comprising the step of providing a safety on the tissue anchor inserter to prevent release of the at least one soft tissue anchor from the tissue anchor inserter until desired.

15. A surgical procedure according to claim 9 , wherein the method comprises treating urinary incontinence.

16. A surgical procedure according to claim 9 , wherein the method comprises treating cystocele in a female patient.

17. A surgical procedure according to claim 9 , wherein the method comprises supporting vaginal tissue.

18. A surgical procedure according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises treating vaginal vault prolapse.
