Accelerometer-based contact sensing assembly and system
View Patent ↗A catheter system including an accelerometer-based sensing assembly is provided. In particular the present teachings relate to an accelerometer based assembly used to determine contact between a catheter and surrounding proximate tissue, such as cardiac tissue. An embodiment of such a system may, for example, be used for visualization, mapping, ablation, or other methods of diagnosis and treatment of tissue and/or surrounding areas.
1. A catheter comprising:
a shaft having a proximal portion, and a distal portion wherein said distal portion has a non-uniform stiffness along the length thereof, and wherein the stiffness of the distal portion is reduced at the outermost end thereof relative to a contiguous inner portion thereof;
an electrode coupled to said distal portion of the shaft, wherein said electrode is coupled to said distal portion to allow displacement of said electrode relative to an axis defined by said stiff distal portion of said shaft; and
an accelerometer configured to generate a signal indicative of an acceleration of said electrode, said catheter further comprising an electrode support structure comprising:
a main assembly disposed within said distal portion of said shaft and coupled to said electrode at a distal end thereof; and
a plurality of proximally directed protrusions;
wherein said proximally directed protrusions are coupled to said stiff distal portion of said shaft; and
wherein said support structure is configured such that electrode displacement causes a deflection of at least one of said protrusions.
2. The catheter of claim 1 , comprising three protrusions and three accelerometers, said three protrusions radially disposed about the perimeter of said main assembly, and each of the accelerometers disposed on a respective protrusion.
3. The catheter of claim 2 , wherein said protrusions are at least one of a c-shape, a u-shape, and an inverted u-shape.
4. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein said plurality of accelerometers are configured to provide respective signals indicative of at least one of a magnitude, an orientation and a directionality of acceleration of said electrode.
5. A catheter comprising:
a shaft having a proximal portion, and a distal portion;
an electrode coupled to said distal portion of the shaft; and
an accelerometer configured to generate a signal indicative of an acceleration of said electrode, said catheter further comprising an electrode coupler, the coupler comprising:
a housing disposed within the shaft, said housing including a proximal portion defining an aperture;
a diaphragm coupled to said housing and disposed across said aperture; and
a coupling lever configured to couple said diaphragm with said electrode such that displacement of said electrode causes a corresponding displacement of said diaphragm;
wherein the accelerometer is coupled to said diaphragm; and
wherein displacement of the electrode causes a corresponding displacement of said accelerometer.
6. The catheter of claim 5 , further comprising a plurality of accelerometers disposed on said diaphragm and configured to provide respective signals indicating at least one of a magnitude, an orientation and a directionality of displacement of said electrode.
