Abstract

A pump assembly adapted for continuous flow pumping of blood. In a particular form the pump is a centrifugal pump wherein the impeller is entirely sealed within the pump housing and is hydrodynamically suspended therein as the impeller rotates within the fluid urged by electromagnetic means external to the pump cavity. Hydrodynamic suspension is assisted by the impeller having deformities therein such as blades with surfaces tapered from the leading edges to the trailing edges of bottom and top edges thereof.

Claims (21)

1. A rotary blood pump for use in a heart assist device, comprising:

a housing;

an impeller suspended in use within the housing by hydrodynamic thrust forces generated by relative movement of the impeller with respect to and within the housing, wherein the impeller is configured to rotate about an axis and the mean flow direction into and out of the housing is both parallel to, and along the axis;

wherein at least one of the impeller and the housing includes at least a first deformed surface lying on at least part of a first face which, in use, moves relative to respective facing surfaces on the other of the impeller and the housing thereby to form a relatively moving surface pair which generates relative hydrodynamic thrust between the impeller and the housing which includes a localized thrust component substantially normal to the first deformed surface.

2. The rotary blood pump of claim 1 , wherein the first deformed surface includes at least one of a tapered inlet portion and a tapered outlet portion of the housing.

3. The rotary blood pump of claim 2 , wherein the at least one of a tapered inlet portion and a tapered outlet portion of the housing are formed by a decreasing radius of the housing.

4. The rotary blood pump of claim 1 , wherein the first deformed surface is angled at approximately 45 degrees with respect to the axis.

5. The rotary blood pump of claim 1 , wherein the first deformed surface and a corresponding adjacent surface of the housing produce both an axial and radial thrust force when the impeller is suspended in use.

6. The rotary blood pump of claim 1 , wherein the impeller and the housing are configured for generating a magnetic bearing for supplementing the hydrodynamic thrust forces.

7. A rotary blood pump for use in a heart assist device, comprising:

a housing;

an impeller suspended in use within the housing by hydrodynamic thrust forces generated by relative movement of the impeller with respect to and within the housing, wherein the impeller is configured to rotate about an axis and the mean flow direction into and out of the housing is along the axis;

wherein at least one of the impeller and the housing includes at least a first deformed surface lying on at least part of a first face which, in use, moves relative to respective facing surfaces on the other of the impeller and the housing thereby to form a relatively moving surface pair which generates relative hydrodynamic thrust between the impeller and the housing which includes a localized thrust component substantially normal to the first deformed surface;

wherein the first deformed surface is a tapered edge of the impeller disposed adjacent at least one of an inlet portion and an outlet portion of the housing.

8. The rotary blood pump of claim 7 , wherein the tapered edge of the impeller is formed by a blade of the impeller.

9. The rotary blood pump of claim 7 , wherein the impeller and the housing are configured for generating a magnetic bearing for supplementing the hydrodynamic thrust forces.

10. A rotary blood pump for use in a heart assist device, comprising:

a housing;

an impeller suspended in use within the housing by hydrodynamic thrust forces generated by relative movement of the impeller with respect to and within the housing, wherein the impeller is configured to rotate about an axis and the mean flow direction into and out of the housing is along the axis;

wherein at least one of the impeller and the housing includes a tapered-land type hydrodynamic thrust bearing comprising at least a first deformed surface lying on at least part of a first face which, in use, moves relative to respective facing surfaces on the other of the impeller and the housing thereby to form a relatively moving surface pair which generates relative hydrodynamic thrust between the impeller and the housing which includes a localized thrust component substantially normal to the first deformed surface.

11. The rotary blood pump of claim 10 , wherein the impeller and the housing are configured for generating a magnetic bearing for supplementing the hydrodynamic thrust forces.
