Abstract

The system described here is a bolt-type seal lock which includes a bolt, having a shaft with proximal and distal portions and a head that is wider than the distal portion of the shaft and located at the proximal portion of the shaft; a locking body configured to receive and retain the shaft in locking engagement after the shaft has been inserted a predetermined extent into an open end of a passageway of the locking body; and a component connected to the locking body such that the component and locking body are rotatable relative to each other, the component configured to be removably mounted to a door of a shipping container, whereby the locking body does not freely swing on the distal portion of the shaft of the bold during movement of the shipping container.

Claims (41)

1. A seal lock, comprising:

(a) a bolt comprising,

(i) a shaft having a proximal portion and a distal portion, and

(ii) a head located at the proximal portion of the shaft, the head being wider than the distal portion of the shaft;

(b) a locking body configured to receive and retain the shaft in locking engagement after the shaft has been inserted a predetermined extent into an open end of a passageway of the locking body; and

(c) a housing connected to the locking body such that the housing and locking body are rotatable relative to each other, the housing configured to be removably mounted to a door of a shipping container, whereby the locking body does not freely swing on the distal portion of the shaft of the bolt during movement of the shipping container;

(d) wherein the locking body comprises a cover member and a USB port, the cover member being configured to swivel between a first position, wherein the cover member covers the USB port and inhibits access to the USB port, and a second position, wherein the cover member protracts away from the locking body and exposes the USB port for access thereto.

2. The bolt-type seal lock of claim 1 , wherein the housing comprises magnets configured to magnetically mount the housing to a door of a shipping container.

3. The bolt-type seal lock of claim 1 , wherein the housing and locking body are rotatable relative to each other about a first axis, and wherein the passageway of the locking body extends along a second axis that is parallel to the first axis.

4. The bolt-type seal lock of claim 1 , further comprising a pin that connects the housing and the locking body such that the housing and locking body are rotatable relative to each other.

The bolt-type seal lock of claim 1 , wherein the locking body comprises a locking mechanism that receives and retains the shaft in the locking engagement after the shaft has been inserted the predetermined extent into the open end of the passageway, at which point the shaft cannot be withdrawn from the open end of the passageway.

The bolt-type seal lock of claim 5 , wherein the locking mechanism comprises a snap ring, and wherein the shaft of the bolt includes two circumferential, sloped surfaces, each surface being configured to engage and expand the snap ring when the distal portion of the shaft of the bolt is pushed into the passageway.

7. A shipping container secured by a seal lock, comprising:

(a) a door including a hasp;

(b) a bolt-type seal lock, comprising:

(i) a bolt comprising,

(A) a shaft having a proximal portion and a distal portion, and

(B) a head located at the proximal portion of the shaft, the head being wider than the distal portion of the shaft,

(ii) a locking body configured to receive and retain the shaft in locking engagement after the shaft has been inserted a predetermined extent into an open end of a passageway of the locking body, and

(iii) a housing pivotably connected to the locking body;

(c) wherein the bolt extends through a loop of the hasp of the door and the head of the bolt precludes passage of the bolt completely through the hasp in a first direction;

(d) wherein the distal portion of the shaft is received within and retained in the locking engagement with the locking body, whereby the door of the shipping container is sealed; and

(e) wherein the housing of the bolt-type seal lock is affixed to a surface of the door of the shipping container such that the housing is secured against movement relative to the surface of the door during movement of the shipping container and

(f) wherein the locking body comprises a cover member and a USB port, the cover member being configured to swivel between a first position, wherein the cover member covers the USB port and inhibits access to the USB port, and a second position, wherein the cover member protracts away from the locking body and exposes the USB port for access thereto.

8. The shipping container secured by a bolt-type seal lock according to claim 7 , wherein the housing comprises permanent magnets that magnetically mount the housing to the shipping container door.

9. The shipping container secured by a bolt-type seal lock according to claim 7 , wherein the housing and locking body are rotatable relative to each other about a first axis, and wherein the passageway of the locking body extends along a second axis that is parallel to the first axis.

10. The shipping container secured by a bolt-type seal lock according to claim 7 , further comprising a pin that connects the housing and the locking body such that the housing and locking body are rotatable relative to each other.

11. The shipping container secured by a bolt-type seal lock according to claim 7 , wherein the locking body comprises a locking mechanism in the locking engagement with the shaft such that the shaft cannot be withdrawn from the open end of the passageway.

The shipping container secured by a bolt-type seal lock according to claim 11 , wherein the locking mechanism comprises a snap ring, and wherein the shaft of the bolt includes two circumferential, sloped surfaces, each surface being configured to engage and expand the snap ring when the distal portion of the shaft of the bolt is pushed into the passageway.

13. A method of securing a shipping container with a seal lock that comprises,

a bolt comprising,

a shaft having a proximal portion and a distal portion, and

a head located at the proximal portion of the shaft, the head being wider than the distal portion of the shaft,

a locking body configured to receive and retain the shaft in locking engagement after the shaft has been inserted a predetermined extent into an open end of a passageway of the locking body, the locking body of the bolt-type seal lock comprising a cover member and a USB port, the cover member being configured to swivel between a first position, wherein the cover member covers the USB port and inhibits access to the USB port, and a second position, wherein the cover member protracts away from the locking body and exposes the USB port for access thereto, and

a housing connected to the locking body such that the housing and locking body are rotatable relative to each other, the housing configured for removably mounting the housing to a door of a shipping container,

the method comprising the steps of,

attaching the housing of the bolt-type seal lock to a door of the shipping container;

inserting the distal portion of the shaft of the bolt through an opening in a hasp of a door of the shipping container such that the shaft of the bolt must be withdrawn from the opening of the hasp in order to open the door of the shipping container without causing structural damage to the shipping container, the head of the bolt being too wide to pass through the opening in the hasp of the door of the shipping container;

aligning the open end of the passageway of the locking body with the opening in the hasp of the door of the shipping container by swiveling the locking body relative to the housing; and

after inserting the distal portion of the shaft of the bolt through the opening in the hasp of the door of the shipping container, further inserting the distal portion of the shaft of the bolt the into the open end of the passageway of the locking body a predetermined extent such that the locking body receives and retains the shaft of the bolt in the locking engagement therewith.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the step of attaching the housing comprises magnetically mounting the housing to a surface of the door of the shipping container using permanent magnets.
