Pyloric valve obstructing devices and methods
View Patent ↗Methods, devices and systems facilitate intermittent and/or partial obstruction of a pyloric valve. Devices generally include a support portion for preventing the device from passing through the pyloric valve and a tissue engagement portion for contacting tissue adjacent the pyloric valve to obstruct the valve. Some embodiments also include a positioning member extending from the tissue engagement portion for helping position the device for obstructing the valve. A retaining member may optionally be included on the distal end of the positioning member for further maintaining a position of the device in the stomach. Some embodiments are deliverable into the stomach through the esophagus, either by swallowing or through a delivery tube or catheter. Some embodiments are fully reversible. Some embodiments self-expand within the stomach, while others are inflated or otherwise expanded.
1. A device for insertion within a stomach of a patient, comprising:
an elongated bridging member detachable from a delivery device and having a proximal end and a distal end;
a proximal occlusion member coupled to a proximal end of the bridging member and sized to have a first diameter for anchoring within the stomach without passage through a pyloric valve, wherein the proximal occlusion member having a first portion thereof that is reconfigurable from a low-profile delivery configuration to an expanded deployment configuration having the first diameter; and
a distal occlusion member coupled to the bridging member at a distance from the proximal occlusion member such that the distal occlusion member is positioned within the intestinal tract, the distal occlusion member having a non-expandable configuration with a second diameter which is smaller than the first diameter such that the distal occlusion member is non-expandable after deployment,
wherein the proximal occlusion member having the first portion surrounding forms a non-inflated or solid structure, more rigid than said first portion, which defines a hollow portion within in its deployment configuration and which is larger than the distal occlusion member, and
where the bridging member comprises a flexible length sufficient to extend through the pyloric valve of the patient such that the proximal occlusion member is proximally translatable relative to the pyloric valve and a passage between the bridging member and the pyloric valve is opened intermittently while the distal occlusion member is flexibly maintained within the intestinal tract.
2. The device of claim 1 wherein the bridging member extends at least 2 cm in length.
3. The device of claim 1 wherein the expanded deployment configuration is sized such that its passage into the intestinal tract is inhibited or prevented.
4. The device of claim 1 further comprising a covering which at least partially covers the proximal occlusion member.
5. A device for insertion within a stomach of a patient, comprising:
an elongated bridging member detachable from a delivery device and having a proximal end and a distal end;
a proximal occlusion member coupled to a proximal end of the bridging member and sized to have a first diameter for anchoring within the stomach without passage through a pyloric valve, wherein the proximal occlusion member having a first portion thereof that is reconfigurable from a low-profile delivery configuration to an expanded deployment configuration having the first diameter; and
a distal occlusion member coupled to the bridging member such that the distal occlusion member is positioned within the intestinal tract and whereby placement of the device in such a manner creates a sensation of satiety in the patient, the distal occlusion member having a non-expandable configuration with a second diameter which is smaller than the first diameter such that the distal occlusion member is non-expandable after deployment,
wherein the proximal occlusion member having the first portion surrounding a non-inflated or solid structure, more rigid than said first portion, which defines a hollow portion within in its deployment configuration and which is larger than the distal occlusion member, and
where the bridging member comprises a flexible length sufficient to extend through the pyloric valve of the patient such that the proximal occlusion member is proximally translatable relative to the pyloric valve and a passage between the bridging member and the pyloric valve is opened intermittently while the distal occlusion member is flexibly maintained within the intestinal tract.
6. The device of claim 5 wherein the expanded deployment configuration is sized such that its passage into the intestinal tract is inhibited or prevented.
7. The device of claim 5 further comprising a covering which at least partially covers the proximal occlusion member.
8. The device of claim 5 wherein placement of the device within the stomach and intestinal tract reduces a flow of food from the stomach such that the sensation of satiety is created in the patient.
9. A device for insertion within a stomach of a patient, comprising:
an elongated bridging member detachable from a delivery device and having a proximal end and a distal end;
a proximal occlusion member coupled to a proximal end of the bridging member and sized to have a first diameter for anchoring within the stomach without passage through a pyloric valve, wherein the proximal occlusion member having a first portion thereof that is reconfigurable from a low-profile delivery configuration to an expanded deployment configuration having the first diameter; and
a distal occlusion member coupled to the bridging member at a distance from the proximal occlusion member such that the distal occlusion member is positioned within the intestinal tract and wherein the bridging member having the distal occlusion member follows along a portion of the intestinal tract, the distal occlusion member having a non-expandable configuration with a second diameter which is smaller than the first diameter such that the distal occlusion member is non-expandable after deployment,
wherein the proximal occlusion member having the first portion surrounding a non-inflated or solid structure, more rigid than said first portion which defines a hollow portion within in its deployment configuration and which is larger than the distal occlusion member, and
where the bridging member comprises a flexible length sufficient to extend through the pyloric valve of the patient such that the proximal occlusion member is proximally translatable relative to the pyloric valve and a passage between the bridging member and the pyloric valve is opened intermittently while the distal occlusion member flexibly follows the portion of the intestinal tract.
10. The device of claim 9 wherein the expanded deployment configuration is sized such that its passage into the intestinal tract is inhibited or prevented.
11. The device of claim 9 further comprising a covering which at least partially covers the proximal occlusion member.
12. The device of claim 9 wherein the bridging member is in contact against tissue along the portion of the intestinal tract.
