Abstract

A method of treating tissue is provided, including positioning a portion of a catheter in proximity to cardiac tissue; measuring an impedance value with the catheter; determining a respiratory rate based at least in part on the measured impedance value; and thermally treating the cardiac tissue with the catheter.

Claims (21)

1. A method of treating tissue, comprising:

thermally treating a tissue region proximate a phrenic nerve;

measuring an impedance value;

correlating the impedance value to a respiratory status, the respiratory status being a response of the phrenic nerve to the thermal treatment;

defining a respiratory status threshold value; and

terminating the thermal treatment of the tissue when the correlated respiratory status is below the predefined threshold value.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein thermally treating a tissue region includes cryoablation.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein thermally treating a tissue region includes radiofrequency ablation.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the respiratory status includes a breathing rate.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein correlating the impedance value to a respiratory status includes amplitude demodulation of the measured impedance value.

6. A method of treating tissue, comprising:

positioning a portion of a catheter in proximity to cardiac tissue, the cardiac tissue being proximate a phrenic nerve;

measuring an impedance value with the catheter;

thermally treating the cardiac tissue with the catheter, the thermal treatment of the cardiac tissue thermally affecting the phrenic nerve;

determining a respiratory rate based at least in part on the measured impedance value, the respiratory rate being in response to the affect on the phrenic nerve of the thermal treatment of the cardiac tissue; and

terminating the thermal treatment of the cardiac tissue based at least in part on the determined respiratory rate.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein thermally treating the cardiac tissue includes cryogenically treating the cardiac tissue.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein thermally treating the cardiac tissue includes ablating the cardiac tissue with radiofrequency energy.

9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising defining a breathing rate threshold, and terminating the thermal treatment of the cardiac tissue when the calculated respiratory pattern is below the predefined threshold value.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein measuring an impedance value with the catheter includes conducting a current between a first electrode located in proximity to the cardiac tissue and a second electrode in proximity to a diaphragm.

11. The method of claim 6 , wherein determining a respiratory rate includes amplitude demodulation of the measured impedance value.
