Abstract

Embodiments of the present invention are directed to ablation catheter systems configured, for example, to ablate tissue adjacent an ostium of the pulmonary vein in a left atria of a heart. In one embodiment, an ablation catheter system includes a handle including an actuator and a catheter coupled to the handle defining a lumen extending through a length of the catheter, the catheter including a tip portion at a distal end thereof. The ablation catheter system may also include an electrode coupled to the handle with lines extending through the lumen of the catheter, the electrode being configured to be constrained within the tip portion of the catheter and configured to be deployed from the tip portion and self expand to an expanded configuration. With this arrangement, the electrode is configured to self expand to a conical configuration with a tip portion configured to be disposed within the pulmonary vein.

Claims (37)

1. An ablation catheter system comprising:

a handle including an actuator;

a catheter coupled to the handle defining a lumen extending through a length of the catheter, the catheter including a catheter tip portion at a distal end of the catheter; and

an electrode coupled to the handle with lines extending through the lumen of the catheter, the electrode being configured to be constrained within the catheter tip portion of the catheter and configured to be deployed from the catheter tip portion and self expand to an expanded configuration, wherein the electrode comprises a tip portion configured to self center the electrode within a pulmonary vein with a proximal portion of the electrode configured to abut against tissue adjacent the ostium of the pulmonary vein,

the electrode including a frame with interconnecting frame struts defining a multi-cellular structure, the interconnecting frame struts extending in the expanded configuration to exhibit a conical configuration.

2. The ablation catheter system of claim 1 , further comprising an energy source coupled to the electrode.

3. The ablation catheter system of claim 2 , wherein the energy source is coupled to a return electrode.

4. The ablation catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the electrode comprises one or more sensors coupled to a sensor display.

5. The ablation catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the electrode is configured to self expand to the conical configuration with the tip portion of the substantially conical configuration to be disposed at least partially within a pulmonary vein.

6. The ablation catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the interconnecting frame struts are configured to expand radially outward from a constrained position within the catheter tip portion.

7. The ablation catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the catheter tip portion comprises a first lumen and a second lumen, the first lumen coinciding with the lumen of the catheter and the second lumen positioned adjacent the first lumen and configured to engage a guide wire to facilitate accessing the left atrium of the heart.

8. The ablation catheter system of claim 1 , further comprising a push rod coupled to the electrode and configured to stabilize the electrode.

9. A catheter system for heating tissue adjacent an ostium of a pulmonary vein, the system comprising:

a catheter having a proximal portion and a distal portion;

an RF energy source operatively connected with the catheter; and

an electrode coupled to the RF energy source and positioned adjacent the distal portion of the catheter, the electrode configured to heat at least one segment adjacent the ostium of the pulmonary vein,

the electrode including a frame with interconnecting frame struts defining a multi-cellular structure, the interconnecting frame struts extending to exhibit a conical configuration.

10. The catheter system of claim 9 , wherein the electrode is configured to measure electrical signals present in tissue adjacent the ostium to determine proper position to heat the tissue.

11. The catheter system of claim 9 , wherein the electrode is configured to measure electrical signals present in the tissue adjacent the ostium to determine characteristics of tissue.

12. The catheter system of claim 9 , wherein the electrode is configured to measure electrical signals at the tissue and further comprising a controller configured to evaluate the electrical signals measured by the electrode.

13. A method of ablating tissue adjacent an ostium of a pulmonary vein, the method comprising:

positioning a distal portion of a catheter adjacent a pulmonary vein;

deploying an electrode from the distal portion of the catheter adjacent the pulmonary vein, the electrode including a frame with interconnecting frame struts defining a multi-cellular structure, wherein the deploying includes expanding the interconnecting frame struts to exhibit a conical configuration;

placing a tip portion of the conical configuration of the electrode at least partially within the pulmonary vein to center the electrode relative to the ostium of the pulmonary vein;

positioning a proximal portion of the electrode against tissue at or near the ostium of the pulmonary vein subsequent to placing the tip portion; and

providing energy to the electrode to ablate the tissue contacted by the electrode.

14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein deploying the electrode from the distal portion of the catheter comprises self-expanding the electrode from the catheter to the expanded, conical configuration.

15. The method according to claim 13 , wherein placing the tip portion of the electrode at least partially within the pulmonary vein includes disposing an expandable structure within the pulmonary vein.

16. The method according to claim 15 , wherein disposing an expandable structure within the pulmonary vein includes placing a balloon within the pulmonary vein and inflating the balloon.

17. The method according to claim 15 , wherein disposing an expandable structure within the pulmonary vein includes placing a body of self-expanding foam within the pulmonary vein.

18. A method of ablating tissue adjacent an ostium of a pulmonary vein, the method comprising:

positioning a distal portion of a catheter adjacent a pulmonary vein;

deploying an electrode from the distal portion of the catheter adjacent a pulmonary vein, the electrode including a frame with interconnecting frame struts defining a multi-cellular structure, wherein the deploying includes expanding the interconnecting frame struts to exhibit a conical configuration;

contacting tissue with the interconnecting frame struts of the electrode with a tip portion of the conical configuration positioned within the pulmonary vein;

measuring electrical characteristics of the tissue through the electrode;

evaluating the measured electrical characteristics; and

ablating tissue with the electrode.
