Abstract

Systems and methods for implementing a communication mode for a communication terminal are provided. An embodiment of a method for implementing a communication mode includes receiving a plurality of messages from a remotely located network control system and implementing one of a plurality of communication modes responsive to the plurality of messages.

Claims (32)

1. A method for communicating by a communication terminal with an agent external to the communication terminal, comprising:

initiating, by the communication terminal, an interactive session with the agent based on a first data communication mode identifier last used to establish a previous interactive session with the agent, the first data communication mode identifier specifying to the communication terminal a manner of communication between the agent and the communication terminal in accordance with a first communication standard or a second communication standard;

responsive to a failure to establish the interactive session with the agent, searching both a first communication channel compliant to the first communication standard and a second communication channel compliant to the second communication standard for a message that comprises a second data communication mode identifier, the second data communication mode identifier specifying to the communication terminal an authorized manner of communication between the agent and the communication terminal in accordance with the first communication standard or the second communication standard; and

establishing the interactive session responsive to the initiating, searching, or a combination of the initiating and searching.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising interspersing the initiating with the searching until the interactive session is established.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein establishing the interactive session between the communication terminal and the agent over one of the first communication channel and the second communication channel is based on the second data communication mode identifier.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein establishing the interactive session between the communication terminal and the agent over one of the first communication channel and the second communication channel is based on the first data communication mode identifier.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first communication standard and the second communication standard each comprises one of a DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications) communication standard and a DAVIC (Digital Audio-Visual Council) communication standard.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first communication channel and the second communication channel each comprises one of a DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications) compliant channel and a DAVIC (Digital Audio-Visual Council) compliant channel.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the message includes an IP address of a remote network control system, a modulator identifier, or a combination of both.

8. The method of claim 1 , where the manner of communication associated with the first communication standard is different than the manner of communication associated with the second communication standard, the manner of communication corresponding to a manner data is modulated over a transmission medium during an established session.

9. The method of claim 1 , where the manner of communication associated with the first communication standard is different than the manner of communication associated with the second communication standard, the manner of communication corresponding to a size and type of packets used for conveying data over a transmission medium during an established session.

10. The method of claim 1 , where the manner of communication associated with the first communication standard is different than the manner of communication associated with the second communication standard, the manner of communication corresponding to a type of transmission medium used during an established session.

11. The method of claim 1 , where the manner of communication associated with the first communication standard is different than the manner of communication associated with the second communication standard, the manner of communication corresponding to whether an established session is connectionless or connection oriented.

12. A communication terminal comprising:

a first tuner;

a second tuner; and

one or more processors programmed to:

initiate with the first tuner or the second tuner an interactive session with an agent based on a first data communication mode identifier last used to establish a previous interactive session with the agent, the first data communication mode identifier specifying to the communication terminal a manner of communication between the agent and the communication terminal in accordance with a first communication standard or a second communication standard;

responsive to a failure to establish the interactive session with the agent, search with the first tuner and the second tuner both a first communication channel compliant to the first communication standard and a second communication channel compliant to the second communication standard for a message that comprises a second data communication mode identifier, the second data communication mode identifier specifying to the communication terminal an authorized manner of communication between the agent and the communication terminal in accordance with the first communication standard or the second communication standard; and

establish with the first tuner or the second tuner the interactive session responsive to the initiating, searching, or a combination of the initiating and searching.

13. The communication terminal of claim 12 , wherein the one or more processors are further programmed to intersperse the initiating with the searching until the interactive session is established.

14. The communication terminal of claim 12 , wherein the one or more processors are further programmed to establish the interactive session between the first tuner or the second tuner and the agent over one of the first communication channel and the second communication channel based on the second data communication mode identifier.

15. The communication terminal of claim 12 , wherein the one or more processors are further programmed to establish the interactive session between the first tuner or the second tuner and the agent over one of the first communication channel and the second communication channel based on the first data communication mode identifier.

16. The communication terminal of claim 12 , wherein the first communication standard is a DAVIC (Digital Audio-Visual Council) standard.

17. The communication terminal of claim 12 , wherein the second communication standard is a DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications) standard.

18. The communication terminal of claim 12 , wherein the message includes an IP address of a remote network control system, a modulator identifier, or a combination of both.

19. The communication terminal of claim 12 , where the manner of communication associated with the first communication standard is different than the manner of communication associated with the second communication standard, the manner of communication corresponding to a manner data is modulated over a transmission medium during an established session, a size and type of packets used for conveying data over a transmission medium during an established session, a type of transmission medium used during an established session, or whether an established session is connectionless or connection oriented.

20. An apparatus, comprising:

means for initiating, by a communication terminal, an interactive session with an agent based on a first data communication mode identifier last used to establish a previous interactive session with the agent, the first data communication mode identifier specifying to the communication terminal a manner of communication between the agent and the communication terminal in accordance with a first communication standard or a second communication standard;

responsive to a failure to establish the interactive session with the agent, means for searching both a first communication channel compliant to the first communication standard and a second communication channel compliant to the second communication standard for a message that comprises a second data communication mode identifier, the second data communication mode identifier specifying to the communication terminal an authorized manner of communication between the agent and the communication terminal in accordance with the first communication standard or the second communication standard; and

means for establishing the interactive session responsive to the initiating, searching, or a combination of the initiating and searching.
