Abstract

The invention provides compositions and methods for increasing cell growth, stimulating cell turnover and promoting the secretion of mucus within the reproductive tract of a female mammal.

Claims (20)

1. A composition consisting essentially of

an effective amount of a vitamin E compound between about 0.0001% and about 50% by weight of the composition;

an effective amount of a jasmonic acid compound between about 0.001% and about 50% by weight of the composition;

a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient for use in a vaginal cavity of a female mammal; and from about 2% to about 50% by weight of the composition

of a gibberellic acid compound; wherein

the composition is a component of a vaginal insert from which the vitamin E compound, the jasmonic acid compound, and the gibberellic acid compound are released during use.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition increases growth of epithelial or epidermal cells, increases expression of mucin-4, or promotes faster cell turnover in the vaginal cavity.

3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the vitamin E compound is a compound of formula I or formula II:

wherein R1, R2, and R3 are independently hydrogen (H), methyl (CH 3 ) or hydroxyl (OH).

4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the jasmonic acid compound is a compound of formula VII, VIII, IX, or X,

wherein:

R4 is alkyl;

R5 is COOR, or —(CH 2 ) n —OX, where n is an integer of from 1 to 20;

R is H, or alkyl;

X is H, or 1 to 6 hexose or pentose sugar residues; and

Y is H, alkyl, or 1 to 6 hexose or pentose sugar residues.

5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the gibberellic acid compound is a compound of formula VI, VIa, or VIb:

6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the vaginal insert is formed from an oleaginous base or ointment.

7. The composition of claim 1 wherein the composition includes the vitamin E compound in a concentration of from about 0.1 μM to about 1000 μM.

8. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition includes the jasmonic acid compound in a concentration of from about 0.1 μM to about 1000 μM.
