FORMULATION FOR CONTROLLED RELEASE OF DRUGS BY COMBINING HYDROPHILIC AND HYDROPHOBIC AGENTS
Combinations of hydrophilic and hydrophobic entities in a biodegradable sustained release implant are shown to modulate each other's rate of release. Formulations of a therapeutically active agent and modulator provide substantially constant rate of release for an extended period of time.
1 . A monolithic implant for treating an ocular condition, the implant comprising:
(a) a biodegradable polymeric matrix;
(b) an anti-inflammatory steroid homogenously distributed through the polymeric matrix, and;
(c) a saccharide for modifying release of the steroid from the polymeric matrix.
2 . The implant of claim 1 , wherein the saccharide is a monosaccharide, a disaccharide or a polysaccharide.
3 . The implant of claim 1 wherein the polymeric matrix comprises a copolymer of glycolic and lactic acid.
4 . A method for treating an ocular condition, the method comprising the step of administering to the vitreous cavity of an eye, a monolithic implant comprising a biodegradable polymeric matrix, an anti-inflammatory steroid homogenously distributed through the polymeric matrix, and a saccharide for modifying release of the steroid from the polymeric matrix.
