Abstract

A unit cell for an inkjet printhead includes a substrate that defines an ink inlet passage, the substrate incorporating drive circuitry. Side walls are arranged on the substrate. A nozzle plate is arranged on the side walls such that the nozzle plate and the side walls define an ink chamber in fluid communication with the inlet passage. The nozzle plate defines an aperture in fluid communication with the ink chamber. A heater element is connected to the drive circuitry. The heater element is configured to generate a bubble of ink to be ejected from the aperture on receipt of an electrical signal from the drive circuitry. The heater element is suspended in the ink chamber such that, when ink is supplied to the chamber, the heater element is immersed in the ink. The heater element is configured so that a collapse point of the bubble is at a position spaced from the heater element.

Claims (12)

1. A unit cell for an inkjet printhead, the unit cell comprising:

a substrate defining an ink inlet passage, the substrate incorporating drive circuitry;

side walls arranged on the substrate;

a nozzle plate arranged on the side walls such that the nozzle plate and the side walls define an ink chamber in fluid communication with the inlet passage, the nozzle plate defining an aperture in fluid communication with the ink chamber; and

a heater element connected to the drive circuitry, the heater element being configured to generate a bubble of ink to be ejected from the aperture on receipt of an electrical signal from the drive circuitry, the heater element being suspended in the ink chamber such that, when ink is supplied to the chamber, the heater element is immersed in the ink, the heater element being configured so that a collapse point of the bubble is at a position spaced from the heater element, wherein

the heater element and the aperture are configured such that the collapse point of the bubble is less than 50 microns from the aperture.

2. A unit cell as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the heater element is configured to have parts which define gaps and to form the bubbles so that the points to which the bubbles collapse are located at such gaps.

3. A unit cell as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the heater element is symmetrical, and has a hole at its center such that, when the element is heated, the bubble forms around the element and then grows so that it spans the element including the hole, the hole then being filled with the vapor that forms the bubble.

4. A unit cell as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the nozzle plate constitutes a structure which is formed in place by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of one of silicon nitride, silicon dioxide and oxi-nitride.

5. A unit cell as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the heater element is formed of a material having at least one periodic element with an atomic weight lower than 50.

6. A unit cell as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the heater element is covered by a conformal protective coating which is electrically non-conductive and chemically inert.

7. A unit cell as claimed in claim 6 , wherein the conformal protective coating is one of aluminum nitride, diamond-like carbon (DLC) and boron nitride.
