Abstract

An electrical circuit is disclosed for driving color strings that have at least one lamp, preferably a light emitting diode (LED). The color strings can be different lengths. In some embodiments, a switch is coupled in parallel to one of the LED strings to shunt power away from the LED string to a power supply or to one or more other LED strings. In some embodiments, a current injector is configured to remove current from or inject current into a node adjacent to an LED string. Methods are disclosed for producing a desired light output utilizing color strings that may be of dissimilar length and that may contain light emitting diodes of different colors.

Claims (23)

1. An electrical circuit comprising:

a first color string and a second color string directly coupled in series, wherein each of the color strings has at least one LED, and further wherein the second color string is coupled to ground;

a power supply configured to provide power to the first color string and the second color string;

a first capacitor and a second capacitor, wherein the first capacitor is coupled in parallel to the first color string and the second capacitor is coupled in parallel to the second color string, and further wherein the first capacitor is coupled in series to the second capacitor, and the second capacitor is coupled to ground;

a first switch and a second switch, wherein the first switch is coupled to a first inductor at a first terminal of the first switch and coupled to a second inductor at a second terminal of the first switch, and the first switch coupled to the first inductor and the second inductor is further coupled in parallel to the first color string, and further wherein the second switch is coupled to the second inductor at a first terminal of the second switch and coupled to a third inductor at a third terminal of the second switch, and the second switch coupled to the second inductor and the third inductor is further coupled in parallel to the second color string,

wherein the first switch is configured to shunt power away from the first color string, and the second switch is configured to shunt power away from the second color string.

2. The electrical circuit of claim 1 , wherein the power supply is a voltage source.

3. The electrical circuit of claim 1 , wherein the power supply is a current source.

4. The electrical circuit of claim 1 , wherein the power shunted away from the first color string is shunted to the second color string.

5. The electrical circuit of claim 1 , further comprising a controller configured to provide a control signal to the first switch and the second switch.

6. The electrical circuit of claim 5 , wherein the control signal is modulated.

7. An electrical circuit comprising:

a plurality of color strings directly coupled in series;

each of said plurality of color strings having at least one LED;

a power supply configured to provide power to said plurality of color strings;

a plurality of capacitors, wherein at least one capacitor is coupled in parallel to each one of said plurality of color strings;

a plurality of inductors; and

a plurality of switches, wherein each of the plurality of switches is coupled to a first one of the plurality of inductors through a first terminal of the switch and coupled to a second one of the plurality of inductors through a second terminal of the switch, wherein each set of one switch and at least two inductors is further coupled in parallel to one of said plurality of color strings, and further wherein the first terminal of each of the plurality of switches is coupled to the power supply through a first diode, and the second terminal of each of the plurality of switches is coupled to ground through a second diode,

wherein each switch is configured to shunt power away from a corresponding one of said plurality of color strings in parallel with the switch and return at least a portion of the shunted power through the first diode back to the power supply at a node between the power supply and a voltage supply.

8. The electrical circuit of claim 7 , wherein the power supply is a voltage source, and the voltage source is configured to provide voltage across said plurality of color strings.

The electrical circuit of claim 7 , wherein the power supply is a current source, the current source is configured to provide current to said plurality of color strings, and each switch is configured to shunt current away from a corresponding one of said plurality of color strings in parallel with the switch.

10. The electrical circuit of claim 7 , further comprising a controller configured to provide a control signal to each switch.

11. The electrical circuit of claim 10 , wherein the control signal is modulated.
