Abstract

An interface cord is operable to connect an external controller to an electrical machine. The interface cord includes a first connector having a first pin configuration, a cable coupled to the first connector, a second connector coupled to the cable and having a second pin configuration different from the first pin configuration, and a circuit board with a programmable electrically coupled in circuit between the first connector and the second connector.

Claims (43)

1. An interface cord operable to connect an external controller to an electrical machine, the interface cord comprising:

a first connector having a first pin configuration;

a cable coupled to the first connector;

a second connector coupled to the cable and having a second pin configuration different from the first pin configuration; and

a circuit board including a programmable device electrically coupled in circuit between the first connector and the second connector, the programmable device being configurable to translate a first signal from the first connector to a second signal for the second connector.

2. The interface cord as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the circuit board includes the first connector in circuit with the programmable device.

3. The interface cord as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the programmable device includes a microcontroller.

4. The interface cord as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the interface cord receives the first signal from the external controller and uploads the second signal to the electrical machine.

5. The interface cord as claimed in claim 1 wherein the interface cord receives the first signal from the external controller and generates the second signal to the electrical machine.

6. The interface cord as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the electrical machine includes

a motor assembly having a stator and a rotor, and

a motor controller connected to the motor assembly and having a third connector operable to receive the second connector of the interface cord.

7. The interface cord as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the cable includes a power line to supply power from the electrical machine to the interface cord.

8. The interface cord as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the programmable device includes a memory having characterization data, and wherein the interface cord is further configurable to upload the characterization data to the electrical machine.

9. A motor-cord assembly coupled to an external controller, the motor-cord assembly comprising:

an electrical machine including

a motor assembly having a stator and a rotor, and

a motor controller connected to the motor assembly and having a first connector with a first pin configuration; and

an interface cord including

a second connector having a second pin configuration different from the first pin configuration,

a cable coupled to the second connector,

a third connector coupled to the cable and engaging the first connector, and

a circuit board including a programmable device electrically coupled in circuit between the second connector and the third connector, the programmable device being configurable to translate a first signal from the second pin configuration to a second signal for the first pin configuration.

10. The motor-cord assembly as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the circuit board includes the second connector coupled in circuit with the programmable device.

11. The motor-cord assembly as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the cable includes a first end directly coupled to the circuit board and a second end directly coupled to the third connector.

12. The motor-cord assembly as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the interface cord is configured to receive the first signal from the external controller and generate the second signal to the electrical machine.

13. The motor-cord assembly as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the programmable device includes a microcontroller.

14. The motor-cord assembly as claimed in claim 9 , wherein the cable includes a power line to supply power from the electrical machine to the interface cord.

15. The method as claimed in claim 14 , wherein the programmable device includes a memory with characterization data, such that the method further comprises

coupling the second connector to the electrical machine,

uploading the characterization data from the interface cord to the electrical machine.

16. The motor-cord assembly as claimed in 9 , wherein the circuit board includes a memory having characterization data and being further configurable to selectively upload the characterization data to the electrical machine.

17. A method of operating an electrical machine with an interface cord including

a first connector having a first pin configuration and a second connector having a second pin configuration different from the first pin configuration,

a cable coupled to the first connector and the second connector, and

a circuit board including a programmable device electrically coupled in circuit between the first connector and the second connector, the method comprising:

receiving with the first connector a first signal having a first signal configuration;

translating the first signal to a second signal having a second signal configuration; and

generating the second signal from the circuit board and through the cable to the electrical machine with the second connector.

18. The method as claimed in claim 17 , wherein receiving the first signal includes receiving the first signal from an external controller.

19. The method as claimed in claim 17 , wherein generating the second signal includes generating the second signal to the electrical machine with the second connector.

20. The method as claimed in claim 19 , wherein the electrical machine includes a motor assembly and a motor controller with a third connector, such that the method further includes engaging the third connector with the second connector of the interface cord.

21. The method as claimed in claim 20 , further comprising operating the motor assembly with the electrical machine as a result of generating the second signal.
